Lawrence, Kan. - After winning the doubles point the Tigers went on to take four singles victories and the match, 5-2, over border rival Kansas (6-8, 1-3 Big 12). Missouri improved to 7-5 on the spring season, 3-1 in Big 12 action. Play began at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday (March 22) morning at the First Serve Tennis Center.
Doubles partners Sofia Ayala and Danielle Day continued their fine spring campaign at No. 3 as they easily put away Kunigunda Dorn and Erin Wilbert, 8-0. The pair finished first and was shortly followed by another Tiger win at No. 2, sealing the doubles point for Missouri. Jessica Giuggioli and Kaitlyn Ritchie took down Jayhawks YulianaSvistun and Maria Martinez, 8-3.
In singles action Day was the first to finish at the No. 5 spot, taking a two-set victory over Martinez, 6-2, 6-1. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Jamie Mera was defeated by Svitsun at the No. 3 position. Kansas then tied the match with a win at No. 1, but would see no more singles victories the rest of the afternoon. Missouri earned wins at the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 spots to defeat the Jayhawks for the third consecutive year.
"This was a hard-fought win in Lawrence. I'm really proud of the way we battled as a team today," said coach Blake Starkey. "Kaitlyn dropped a tight first set but you can see how she's really grown as a player. We are very proud of the way she regrouped in the second and third set over a very experienced Dorn to earn the set victory."
Missouri will take a day off before getting back to practice. The Tigers will be back in action on Friday (March 27) when they play host to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Play begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Green Tennis Center. Missouri will then face the Baylor Bears on March 29 in Columbia, play beginning at 1:00 p.m.
