Columbia, Mo. - Fresh off of a first place finish at the season-opening Show-Me Showdown, the Missouri women's swimming and diving squad is set to host Texas in a head-to-head battle beginning at 6 p.m. (CT) in the Mizzou Aquatics Center. This marks Texas' first return trip to Columbia since tying with the Tigers (121-121) in 2005. The dual was the first ever contested in the state-of-the-art Mizzou Aquatics Center.
The Thursday evening dual will feature 13 events. Anxious to return to the competition setting, the Tiger women are led by senior Colleen Gordon in the 100 IM and 50 fly. Gordon is one of four Missouri NCAA qualifiers to return for the 2009-10 season. Alongside Gordon, Kayla Durnil, Lauren Lavigna and Francie Szostak will continue their run to the 2010 NCAA Championships. Szostak, a junior, helped the Tiger women to a first place finish in the 200-free relay last Saturday at the Show-Me Showdown. Senior Kim Jasmer and sophomores Lisa Nathanson and Stephanie Rovig rounded out the four-person team.
Jasmer, a transfer from Washington, has made an immediate impact on the Tiger team and is in search of her first Big 12 victory against Texas. In addition to competing in the 200-free relay last Saturday, Jasmer took top honors in the 100 fly with a time of 53.23.
""I don't think we can highlight any one person, and I think that's the strength of this team," Missouri Head Coach Brian Hoffer said. "We have a lot of people that can really come in and contribute and compete at a very high level. We'll see how it all shakes out, but I think on any given weekend any athlete could win a meet for us. For me that's really exciting as a head coach--to have a lot of options."
Following Thursday's competition with Texas, the women will swim in the Big 12 Relays beginning at 9 a.m. (CT) Friday, Oct. 16.
