Tiger Men, Women Second After Day One

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Tigers Track and Field team began day one of the Second Annual Jefferson Cup dual against the University of Virginia with six individual winners on Friday, and go into tomorrow's final day with both the men and women in second place in the team standings. The men trail the Cavaliers 48-47, while the women trail 50-44.

Chris Davis, Leslie Farmer, Lana Mims, Shannon Leinert, Daniel Hunter and Dan Quigley all took top honors after the first day of competition, with most of the Tiger winners also setting regional qualifying times.

After a week off, Leinert took the women's 800-meter run in a time of 2:09.12, setting a new meet record in the event earning five points for the Tigers, while Ellen Ries' time of 2:13.94 earned another point for Missouri

Davis and Farmer both took top honors in the 400-meter hurdles, with each setting new meet records in the process. Davis finished the race in a time of 52.22 seconds, while Farmer crossed the line in 1:01.79.

Mims and Sierra Gant finished one-two in the women's 200-meter dash finals. Mims had the best time overall running in heat two with at time of 24.57 seconds, while Gant, also running in the same heat, finished in a time of 24.79 seconds.

Quigley set a meet record time in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 9:01.65, while Michael Barrows finished fourth with a finish of 9:28.72.

The 4x100-meter relay women's team took first place with at time of 46.74 seconds, besting Virginia's 47.49, earning another five points for the women's team. The men's relay team finished second in their race with a time of 42.41 seconds.

Hunter set a meet record in the men's high jump clearing 6 feet, 10.75 inches, besting the Cavaliers' Greg Nelson, while Nick Adcock finished third with a jump of 6 feet, 6.75 inches.

Chris Rohr and Tim Opfer finished second and third in the men's discus, as Rohr's final throw of 174 feet, 6 inches and Opfer's fifth throw of 161 feet, 3 inches gave the Tigers men's squad another five points.

Hannah Cooper and Abbie Garlich finished second and third in the women's pole vault, Cooper clearing 10 feet, 11.75 inches, Garlich clearing 10 feet even.

Aaron Dixon and Blake Irwin earned a combined five points for the men's team, finishing second and third in the men's 800-meter run with Dixon's time of 1:50.40 being a meet record.

The Tigers and Cavaliers will conclude the second annual Jefferson Cup tomorrow morning, with events beginning at 10 a.m.
