Columbia, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Football Coach Gary Pinkel announced that seniors Chase Daniel, Evander "Ziggy" Hood , William Moore and Tommy Saunders were voted captains by their teammates for the 2008 season.
Daniel is the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 4,306 yards as a junior in 2007. Also named the 2007-08 Big 12 Athlete of the Year, Daniel was a finalist for the O'Brien, Walter Camp and Manning awards and was named Second Team All-America by the Associated Press, Walter Camp and Sporting News. The 6-0, 225-pound quarterback finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 2007, the highest finish ever by a Tiger.
Moore is a preseason All-Big 12 and All-America selection at strong safety for the Tigers after tying for the nation's lead with eight interceptions in 2007. The Hayti, Mo., native also ranked among team leaders with 117 tackles and is tied for the Missouri career record with three interceptions returned for scores.
Hood has been a mainstay along the defensive front for Mizzou over his first three seasons in Black and Gold and ranked among the team leaders with eight tackles-for-loss and five sacks. The Amarillo, Texas, native also ranked second among defensive linemen with his 49 total tackles in 2007.
Saunders has been one of the team's more reliable pass-catchers over his career and recorded a career high 41 grabs for 397 yards and a score in 2007. Also the holder for All-American place kicker Jeff Wolfert, Saunders, a native of Kearney, Mo., turned in a career-best effort against Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., last year, hauling in eight passes for 82 yards.
Monday marked the opening day of practice for the No. 7 Tigers, as they begin preparations for the season-opener on Aug. 30 against No. 19 Illinois at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. and the contest will be nationally-televised on ESPN.
