Stillwater, Okla. - The 61st-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls (11-8/5-5 Big 12) defeated the University of Missouri women's tennis team (10-12/2-8 Big 12), 5-2, Friday afternoon at the windy DeBois Tennis Complex in Stillwater, Okla. The Tigers will have one final chance at another regular season conference win Saturday when they face Oklahoma in at 11 a.m. in Norman.
The Cowgirls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as they won the doubles point and Iryna Tkachenko defeated Mallory Weber, 6-2, 6-2.
The Tigers would show they were not going away easily, though, as Kaitlyn Ritchie won at No. 5 and Sofia Ayala won at No. 6 to even the match at 2-2. Ritchie won her second straight conference contest by defeating Maryna Tkachenko, 6-2, 6-2. It is the freshman's 17th victory this season, including fall tournament wins. Ayala also won, 6-2, 6-2, as she beat Jessica Collins to earn her 10th win this spring. She has won five of her last six Big 12 matches in straight sets.
Mizzou could not continue the comeback, though, as the Cowgirls won at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles to take the match, their fifth conference win of the season.
At No. 2, Yawna Allen beat Jessica Giuggioli, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 3, Jo-Anne Karaitiana won the first and third sets by 6-3 scores, to take a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, win over Tiger Senior Chrissy Svetlic. And at No. 4, Sasha Belova fought off a second set rally by Maureen Modesto to pull off the, 6-2, 7-5, win.
