COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri volleyball team (9-9, 3-5 Big 12) looked to end their three-match losing streak in taking down Kansas (8-9, 2-6 Big 12) Wednesday night in the first installment of the M&I Bank Border Showdown Series. Missouri did just that winning in four sets, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, and 25-19. Sophomore Julianna Klein (Keota, Iowa) led all scorers with 19 kills.
The softer side of Juliana Klein (Keota, Iowa) came out in tonight's match, as a large number of her 63 attacks and her kills came off soft finesses shots. Klein's serving was still on point, however, and did not lack any of her typical power. Klein also avoided any service errors and tallied one ace.
Sophomore Caitlyn Vann (Muncie, Ind.) again had a spectacular night, racking 26 digs to frustrate the Kansas frontline.
Lei Wang (Shanghai, China) and Amanda Hantouli (Omaha, Neb) were on their defensive game going up together for a team-leading four blocks. Other team leaders were Weiwen Wang (Nanjing, China) with .438 hitting percent with a tied-career-high 16 kills and Hantouli with a .400 hitting percentage, scoring 12 kills on just 20 attempts. Overall the team outhit Kansas .274-.233.
Kansas was led by Karina Garlington's 17 kills.
The first set opened with two quick points for Klein and Weiwen Wang. After that the teams traded points until the 7-7 mark. The Tigers went on a 4-0 run, three of those points coming off blocks. The forced the Jayhawks to take their first timeout. Kansas looked to have an affective game plan getting two out of the first three points but the Tigers stayed ahead going on their own 4-2 run taking the score to 16-12. The Jayhawks were not ready to back down making a 3-1 run but Mizzou answered with their own 3-1 run making the score 21-16. Kansas called another timeout but still had no answer for the Tigers. The set was wrapped up on a serve that was mishandled by Kansas with the final score at 25-20.
Like the first set, the second set stayed tight and had four tied scores up until 7-7. The Tigers took control of the set going 6-3 and four of those points coming of dominant play from W Wang. The Jayhawks took a timeout at 14-10. Out of the timeout they went on a 4-1 run with the help of some sloppy play from the Tigers making the set 15-14. Missouri quickly rebounded putting up three points and extending their lead once again. Kansas tried to regroup in a timeout but the Tigers looked tough to beat with powerful kills from Klein and Hantouli but the Jayhawks managed to creep back in. The Tigers had their lead shrunk from 22-15 to 23-18 and took a timeout. Mizzou wrapped up the set winning 25-19.
Neither side could gather momentum to run away with the set. There were nine ties up until the 14-15 mark and neither team lead by more than two points at that point. Both teams continued to trade points until the Jayhawks hit their stride and push the set to 19-22 when Missouri called a timeout. Mizzou was not able to mount a comeback and fell 21-25 in the third set.
Kansas and Missouri stayed close through the early points. At the 6-6 mark the Tigers took control and went on a 5-1 run making the score 11-7 and forcing a Jayhawk timeout. Kansas made a comeback tying up the set at 13-13. With two big kills from W Wang and one from Catie Wilson the Tigers pulled back in from 16-13. Missouri slowly pulled a head and then Klein unloaded on the Jayhawks with four power packed kills. Mizzou won with a score of 25-19.
The Tigers are off to Austin to face Texas so if you are heading down for football stop in and cheer. The game is at 6:30.
