Mizzou's Julia Potter defeated Dottie Ardina of the Philippines 3&2 in the opening round of match play at the 108th United States Women's Amateur Championship in Eugene, Ore. Potter advances to the second round of the match play competition where she will face Megan McChrystal of Stuart, Fla. in the round of 32.
Potter was 2-up after the first two holes against Ardina before dropping back-to-back holes to bring the match back to all square. She then birdied the sixth hole to go 1-up and never trailed again. Potter, 3-up going to the 16th hole, closed out the match with a par to claim the 3&2 victory.
Potter and McChrystal will tee off at 10 a.m. PT (Noon CT) with the winner advancing to the round of 16, which will be played Thursday afternoon.
A junior-to-be, Potter qualified for the match play portion of the Championship by carding rounds of 73 and 70 in the stroke-play qualifying rounds played earlier this week.
