Feb. 9, 2008

Box Score

Miami, Fla.. -A two-hour rain delay in the bottom of the fifth inning pushed Missouri's fourth softball game of the Florida International University (FIU) Invitational into the early evening hours where the Tigers suffered a 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh (3-0) and fell to 2-2 on the season.

Competing at University Park in Miami, Fla., the Tigers were held to only two hits, both coming from junior shortstop Lindsey Ubrun (Freeland, Mich.). Four games into the season, Ubrun is 6-for-13 at the plate and has scored three of Missouri's 11 runs, as well as recorded five of the Tigers 11 RBI.

Scoring two runs on Jessica Dignon's home run in the top of the first inning, Pittsburgh took a lead that the Tigers were unable to overcome. Missouri had eight players in scoring position in the game, but were only able to drive in one on Ubrun's sixth inning triple. Freshman Shana White (Columbia, Mo.) led off the sixth with a groundout, bringing three-hole hitter, senior Amanda Renth (Mascoutah, Ill.), to the plate. Renth reached first on a throwing error by Panther third baseman Megan Livesey, and freshman Lisa Simmons (Boonville, Mo.) entered the game to pinch run. Ubrun took Cory Berlinger's pitch deep for Missouri's first triple of the season, giving Simmons time to score from first. Ubrun's first hit of the game was a fourth inning, one out single through the left side.

Tiger lefty Jana Hainey was saddled with her first loss of the campaign and stands at 1-1. Hainey threw her second complete game and stuck out eight panthers in seven innings. Berlinger improves to 2-0.

Missouri will take on No. 15 Virginia Tech for the second time of the tournament. First pitch is slated for 8 a.m. (CT), Sunday, Feb. 10.
