COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Twenty-seven standout student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend the University of Missouri and play football for Head Coach Gary Pinkel, as announced today by Mizzou's head coach.
Mizzou's class was ranked today by Rivals.com as the nation's 32nd-best recruiting class overall, based on their point system. The Tiger class stood as 6th-highest in the Big 12 according to Rivals, which ties for the best showing in Pinkel's time at Mizzou, matching the previous bests of 6th in both 2003 and 2004.
According to the Rivals.com rankings, Mizzou's 2007 recruiting class rates ahead of 36 other schools that participated in bowl games during the 2006 season. Just a handful of the other bowl teams from last year that Missouri bettered include: Maryland (34th), West Virginia (36th), Rutgers (37th), UCLA (38th), Texas A&M (39th), Louisville (41st), Kansas State (42nd), Boston College (45th), Arizona State (46th), Oregon State (47th), Texas Tech (49th), Kentucky (53rd), BYU (54th), Southern Mississippi (55th), Minnesota (57th), South Florida (58th), Boise State (66th), Purdue (67th), Utah (69th), Hawaii (73rd), TCU (78th), and Wake Forest (81st), among many others. In all, Mizzou's class stands better than 34 other BCS schools.
Ten student-athletes from Mizzou's 2007 class hail from the state of Missouri, including eight of the state's top 14 players, according to Rivals, and that number jumps to 13 when the metropolitan areas of Kansas City and St. Louis are factored in. Once again, the state of Texas was a big focal point for MU's recruiting efforts, and those efforts paid off with a group of five players from the Lone Star State. Mizzou also signed two student-athletes from the states of California, Kansas and Louisiana, and one each from the states of Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
Mizzou received rave reviews for its efforts in shoring up its defensive line, as the Tigers' defensive end class was ranked 5th-best in the nation, according to Rivals, while Mizzou's defensive tackle class was ranked as 12th-best in the land. Mizzou's running back class was rated 17th-best in the country by Rivals, while its athlete class came in at 23rd-best.
"We are very pleased and excited to have this group join our program," said MU Head Coach Gary Pinkel. "I believe we have addressed some key areas of need and have a good mix of people who can contribute right away, to go with a good group of guys that will have time to develop and mature in the program. Our staff worked very hard to put together a class that we believe will represent the University of Missouri well on and off the field," he said.
