Irving, Texas - Following a career high 401 passing yards and 473 yards of total offense in a 41-6 win over Nebraska, Mizzou junior quarterback Chase Daniel (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) was named the Big 12 Conference's Offensive Player of the Week by the league office on Monday.
It was a record-setting day for Missouri's junior signal caller, as he completed 33-of-47 passes for 401 yards and two scores against the Huskers, helping the Tigers race to their second consecutive 5-0 start under Head Coach Gary Pinkel. Daniel's legs were also destructive to the "Black Shirt" defense, as he rushed for a game high 72 yards on just 11 carries and two more TDs. While his 401 passing yards finished as the fourth most in school history, his remarkable 473 yards of total offense were the second most by a Tiger in school annals, finishing just behind Brad Smith, who racked up 480 total yards against Nebraska in 2005.
Daniel now ranks No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference with 342.2 yards passing per game and his 380.0 yards of total offense per outing ranks No. 3 in nation. A big-game performer throughout his MU career, the Southlake, Texas, native improved to 13-5 as a starter and has been at his best vs. ranked opposition this season. Including contests against No. 25 Nebraska and currently-No. 18 Illinois, Daniel is a combined 70-of-101 for 760 yards with five passing TDs, two rushing scores and zero interceptions.
Daniel's Big 12 award completes the "Tiger Trifecta" this season with regards to Big 12 weekly honors. Senior safety Pig Brown (Adel, Ga. / Reedley C.C.) won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 4 following his career day against currently No. 18 Illinois in St. Louis. Brown recovered two fumbles (returning one 100 yards for a score) and picked off a pass in Mizzou's 40-34 season-opening win. Freshman phenom Jeremy Maclin (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood) won Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 24 following 238 all-purpose yards against Illinois State. Maclin returned a punt 64 yards for a score, while totaling 163 return yards, 22 rushing yards and 53 receiving yards vs. the Redbirds.
No. 11 Missouri returns to action on Saturday evening when it travels to Norman, Okla., to face No. 6 Oklahoma at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net and ESPN's nationally-renowned College Game Day crew of Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit will be broadcasting live from the OU campus before the Tigers and Sooners square off at Owen Field. The ESPN Game Day appearance will be a program first for Mizzou.
