WACO, Texas - Alyssa Hollins' 18 footer in the final seconds fell short as Missouri dropped a heartbreaking 71-70 decision at No. 13/11 Baylor at the Ferrell Center on Wednesday.
With Baylor leading by one with 12.7 seconds remaining, Bernice Mosby missed the front end of a 1-and-1 set-up the final play. Hollins, who finished with 19 points had an open look with 3 seconds left only to see it carom off the front rim and into Mosby's hands as time expired.
Missouri (14-7, 2-6) was led by EeTisha Riddle's game high 26 points. She added 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the year and fifth in eight Big 12 games.
Missouri trailed 34-25 at the half after committing an uncharacteristic 15 turnovers which Baylor turned into eight points. The Tigers finished with 24 but outrebounded the Bears 37-30.
"I told the kids before the game if we won the battle of the boards, we would have a chance," MU Head Coach Cindy Stein said. "What I didn't count on was 24 turnovers."
Trailing 42-36 with 15:09 to play, Mizzou went on a 9-0 run to take a 45-42 lead with 12:38 left. The Tigers extended their lead to nine with just under 10 minutes to play but Baylor battled back.
The Bears used a 17-7 run to take a 61-60 lead with 4:47 on the clock. BU led by five before a pair of Riddle free throws and a Marchele Campbell 3-pointer cut the deficit to 71-70 leading into Mosby's free throw situation.
Baylor (19-3, 6-2) got 21 points off the bench from Jhasmin Player, including 15 in the second half. Mosby had 17 and six rebounds.
Both teams shot 48 percent and the Tigers made all nine free throws in the game.
Missouri will conclude its two-game road trip at Iowa State on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off at Hilton Coliseum is set for 3 p.m. CST and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
