SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Members of the Missouri track and field teams competed Wednesday in day one of the NCAA Championships held in Sacramento. Krishna Lee and Trisa Nickoley advanced to a later round of their respective women's hammer throw and women's 800-meter events. In addition, senior Bjorn Sommerfeldt completed day one of his final decathlon as a Tiger.
Lee (Kansas City, Mo.), a sophomore, continues her impressive post-season run, qualifying for Friday's final in the women's hammer throw with a throw of 195-4 (59.55m). Her mark was the 10th best in the field, six feet better than the 12th-best qualifying position. Lee entered the event as the 19th seed out of 28 competitors and she is the only Big 12 athlete that will make an appearance in the final.
Lee will continue a busy weekend on Thursday as she will compete in the qualifying round of the women's shot put, starting at 9:15 p.m. (CT).
Junior Trisa Nickoley (Tecumseh, Kan.) will advance to tomorrow's semifinal of the women's 800-meter run after placing third in heat with a 2:06.21 clocking. In the same heat as defending champ Rebekah Noble of Oregon, Nickoley charged to the front on the final curve, but was challenged on the homestretch by Noble and UTEP's Fatimoh Muhammed. Each of the top four in Nickoley's heat finished within a half second of each other.
Senior Bjorn Sommerfeldt is in 18th after day one of the men's decathlon with 3,674 points. He ran the 100-meter dash in 11.44, long jumped to 23-3½ (7.10m), putted the shot 42-8¾ (13.02m), high jumped 6-1½ (1.87m), and ran the 400-meter dash in 52.20. Sommerfeldt will conclude his final decathlon as a Tiger tomorrow with the remaining five events.
Senior Marcus Mayes (Sand Springs, Okla.) clocked a 1:50.48 in the preliminary round of the men's 800. His time placed him sixth in his heat and 23rd overall. Mayes led at the bell, but was quickly challenged by the rest of the field as a classic backstretch battle setup. Mayes tried to overcome, but was not able to catch the lead pack that developed on the turn.
In the men's hammer throw, junior Jason Morris (St. Louis, Mo.) finished 16th with a throw of 202-11 (61.86m).
Tomorrow's action for the Tigers includes the conclusion of the men's decathlon, semifinal rounds of the 800, and the qualifying rounds of the men's and women's shot put.
