Miami/Kent State Post-Game Notes

General Game Notes

  • With the win, Miami will advance to play the loser of Saturday night's Mizzou - Louisville contest on Sunday at 1 p.m. Kent State is eliminated from Regional play.
  • Official game attendance was 845.
  • Today's game was the second meeting between Kent State and Miami and that initial meeting also came in NCAA Regional action. The Hurricanes won the game 4-1 on May 28, 1994, in Coral Gables, Fla.

Miami Game Notes

  • Eight of Miami's nine starters finished the game with at least one hit. Only second baseman Jemile Weeks didn't record a hit.
  • Miami finished the game with seven extra-base hits. The Hurricanes had a pair of home runs and five doubles.
  • Miami center fielder and Columbia Hickman product Blake Tekotte led off the game with a solo home run. The round-tripper was his third of the year and the second time he has led off a game with a blast this season. Tekotte led off the Wright State contest with a homer as well.
  • Left fielder Mark Sobolewski also homered to lead off the second inning. The blast was his seventh of the year. Sobolewski finished the game with two runs scored, plating Miami's third run in the fourth inning on a Richard O'Brien double.
  • The two home runs were the second and third of the Regional for the Hurricanes. Catcher Richard O'Brien hit a homer on Friday vs. Louisville.
  • O'Brien was also solid on Saturday as well, finishing the game with a pair of RBIs. O'Brien now has seven RBIs in his last four games, including three RBIs in Regional play.
  • Overall, Miami pounded out double figure hits for the second consecutive day, finishing with 13 base-knocks after recording 11 hits on Friday vs. Louisville. Miami has recorded double figure hits in 11 of their last 13 games.
  • Yonder Alonzo walked twice this afternoon and increased his total to 64 on the year, which ranks No. 6 on Miami's all-time single-season list. Alonzo also recorded his 13th double of the year. The hit was Alonzo's third of the Regional after going 2-for-4 on Friday vs. Louisville.
  • Dave DiNatale went a career high 3-for-3 with his sixth double of the year. Miami's No. 9 hitter, the right fielder entered the game hitting just .216 but is 4-for-7 in NCAA Regional action. He also reached base on a walk.

Kent State Game Notes

  • Kent State went 7-0 in the month of May in one-run games, but the month of June saw the Golden Flashes fortunes change as they fell by an 8-7 margin. Kent State's last loss in a one-run game came to Wooster on April 18 (3-2).
  • Kent State scored their first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Doug Saunders. The RBI was his 28th of the year. Saunders also singled in the sixth inning.
  • Saunders finished the game with a pair of RBI, being hit by a Garcia pitch in the eighth inning with the bases loaded.
  • Brad Winter led Kent State with two runs scored.
  • Andrew Davis drove in his team-leading 54th run in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded single to right field. The hit was Davis' first of the Regional. Davis finished his Kent State career with 313 hits, falling just short of the Mid-American Conference record held by Northern Illinois' Scott Simon. Simon had 318 career hits for the Huskies.
  • Anthony Gallas finished with a game high three RBIs. Gallas led the charge in Kent State's six-run eighth inning, recording a three-run double. Gallas finished the regional with three hits, including two today.
