Louisville Plates 10 Unanswered to Post 13-7 Win Over Miami

June 1, 2007

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Louisville beat the Miami Hurricanes 13-7 in Game One of the Columbia, Mo., Regional earning its first ever win in NCAA Regional competition. Trailing 7-3 heading into the top of the third inning, the Cardinals scored 10 unanswered runs over the course of the next seven innings to take a 13-7 victory.

"I think coming in, we were real confident," Louisville catcher Derrick Alfonso said. "We knew we were playing Miami with the tradition and everything. We just wanted to come out and make a statement that we're here. We're a good baseball team."

The Louisville bullpen worked 7.1 innings, surrendering three hits and no runs. Gavin Logsdon worked 2.1 innings and was credited with the win. Fellow Louisville reliever Kyle Hollander worked four perfect innings and closer Trystan Magnusun worked the ninth for the Cardinals.

"The bullpen might be a little overlooked," Louisville Head Coach Dan McDonell said. "You don't get a lot of awards coming out of middle relievers. But it's those blue collar guys in the middle--Gavin Logsdon and, of course, the job Kyle Hollander did there." Miami reliever Kyle Bellamy worked a third of an inning and was charged with the loss. Starter Scott Maine worked four innings, gave up four earned runs on eight hits and two walks.

Miami scored its first run in the top of the first when Dennis Raben knocked in Roger Tomas with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Louisville countered with three runs in the top of the second on a Maine wild pitch and a one-out, two-run single from Daniel Burton.

The Hurricanes scored six runs in the second inning to chase Louisville starter Zack Pitts, the Big East Pitcher of the Year, off the mound after 1.2 IP. Miami batted 12 times and was aided by a Richard O'Brien solo homer, a three-run triple from Jemile Weeks, two walks and a hit by pitch.

Louisville got a run back in the third when Alfonso hit his fifth homer of the year. In the fourth, Miami-native Jorge Castillo hit a three-run homer to right field, tying the game at 7-7.

Burton drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a two-out single in the fifth. The Hurricanes used three different pitchers in the inning--Kyle Bellamy, Teddy Kaufman and David Gutierrez. Bellamy surrendered walks to Chris Cates and Whiting before Burton hit the single off Gutierrez.

Isaiah Howes hit his team-leading 16th home run of the season in the top of the seventh off Guitierrez.

Alfonso and Cates both scored on long fly balls to left field that bounced off the wall in the eighth inning. Boomer Whiting was credited with a single and driving in Alfonso, while Cates scored on an error given to Miami left fielder Mark Sobolewski.

Alfonso ended the scoring in the ninth with a one-out single that scored third baseman Chris Dominguez. Alfonso finished with five hits and two RBI.

Through a wild first three and a half innings, the two teams combined for six hit batters, 14 runs and 17 hits. Louisville ended with 15 hits; the Hurricanes had 11.
