COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri senior SS David Overstreet was named today as the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office. Overstreet was cited for his outstanding play as he helped lead Mizzou to a 41-21 Homecoming victory over Kansas State last Saturday – a win that saw MU break a 13-game losing streak to the Wildcats.
Overstreet led Mizzou with 11 tackles (film adjusted) against Kansas State this past Saturday. He scored the first touchdown of his career in the game, when he snagged a fumble and returned it 41 yards for a score in the 3rd quarter to extend MU's lead to 34-7. Overstreet also broke up one pass on the day. A pre-season 2nd-team All-American by one media outlet, Overstreet currently ranks 3rd on the Tiger squad with 53 tackles, and is 2nd on the team with 5 pass break ups.
This marks the 1st time that Overstreet (a Dallas, Texas native) has won the weekly league award, and it comes during the week that he is preparing to play the school where his late father, David Overstreet, became one of the top running backs in college football back in the 1970s and 80s. This is the 3rd time this season, and the 10th time overall that a Tiger has won Big 12 Defensive POW honors. Overstreet joins DE Brian Smith and LB Marcus Bacon, who won the honor in consecutive weeks earlier this year. It is also the 4th time overall this year that a Tiger has won Big 12 POW honors, as QB Chase Daniel won the offensive award in week #1.
Tigers have won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors 11 times previously (six by Brad Smith, two each by Corby Jones and Devin West and one by Chase Daniel) and four times have won league Special Teams Player of the Week honors (two by Marcus James, one each by Adam Crossett and Brad Hammerich).
