Columbia, Mo. -
The 2005 fall semester was one featuring much excitement on the field of competition for the University of Missouri, as its volleyball team made its first-ever Elite Eight appearance, and its football squad capped the year with an historic come-from-behind win in the Independence Bowl, to name just a couple of accomplishments.
Just as importantly, however, Mizzou student-athletes continued their outstanding achievements in the classroom during the fall semester. According to Bryan Maggard, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services, the semester was one of the best on record for Tiger student-athletes.
For the semester, Mizzou student-athletes recorded an overall fall grade point average (GPA) of 2.91 - marking a record high among fall semesters for Tiger Athletics. The previous mark was a 2.90 fall GPA, previously set in 2002 and 2004.
Four Tiger teams set fall semester GPA records for their sport, including Men's Cross Country (3.40), Softball (3.33), Volleyball (3.29) and Men's Track and Field (3.21). Eight other sports had team GPAs of 3.0 or higher, including Women's Cross Country (3.54), Women's Golf (3.46), Women's Track and Field (3.36), Soccer (3.30), Tennis (3.28), Women's Swimming (3.24), Gymnastics (3.22) and Men's Swimming (3.06).
In all, 54 percent of Mizzou's student-athletes achieved a semester GPA of 3.00 or higher, and a fall-record 159 Tigers made the Dean's List.
"It was a great start to the year for our student-athletes," said Maggard. "We're very pleased with the progress that our kids are continuing to make. They work very hard with their classwork, and our Total Person Program staff does an outstanding job of giving our kids the resources they need to be successful. We also have an outstanding faculty that supports all students on this campus, which contributes to success in the classroom," he said.
