Mizzou Track Has Tune-Up Weekend, Awaits Big 12 Meet

COLUMBIA, Mo.--One weekend before the Big 12 Championships, the Missouri Track & Field squad split to three different locales for final tune-ups before the impending conference meet. Jamie Wynn qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the women's discus at the Ward Haylett Invite in Manhattan, Kan., becoming the 23rd Tiger to qualify for regional competition. In addition, senior Neville Miller qualified for his second event, the 1500-meter run, at the Billy Hayes Classic.

 

Penn State Open

A group of nine competed at the Penn State Open on Saturday in State College, Pa. The meet served as the final home meet for Nittany Lion coach Harry Groves who is retiring after 38 years at Penn State and 53 years of collegiate coaching. Missouri coach Rick McGuire (sports psychologist) and Groves (head coach) served on the staff of the 1989 USA World Cup team that brought home the last men's American team victory in that event.

 

At the Penn State meet, sophomore Bobby Musil added five feet to his personal best in the men's discus, winning the competition with a 184 foot, 11 inch toss (56.36m) that leaps him into the national top-30 in the event.

 

Sophomore Jason Morris won the men's hammer with a mark of 207-8 (63.31m). Morris now owns five of the top nine performances in Mizzou history in the event. Sophomore Tyler Dailey was second at 202-5. Musil was third at 195-2 (59.49m), adding 18 inches to his personal best in the event.

 

Senior Chris Horn placed second in the men's long jump, extending his season best and NCAA-regional qualifying mark by leaping to 24-4½ (7.43m). Horn also finished third in high jump, hoping over 6-8¾ (2.05m).

 

Freshman Ben Wade was third in men's 1500-meter run, clocking a 4:02.43.

 

Ward Haylett Invitational

Also Saturday, a group of Tigers competed in the Ward Haylett Invitational.

 

Junior Jamie Wynn earned her first NCAA-regional qualifying mark of the season in the women's discus, placing third with a 160-8 (48.98m) throw.

 

Freshman JaNay Woolridge finished third in the long jump at 18-7¾.

 

Billy Hayes Classic

Friday, a handful of Mizzou tracksters competed at the Billy Hayes Classic in Bloomington, Ind.

 

Senior Neville Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) qualified for a second NCAA-regional event in placing seventh in the men's 1500-meter run, clocking 3:47.21, a new personal best.

 

Tiger post-collegian Timothy Dunne won the men's 800-meter run with a season's-best time of 1:48.04.

 

Senior Laura Brandt was fourth in the women's 400-meter dash, running 57.26.

 

Peterson Runs Fast in Jamaica

Derrick Peterson ran one of the fastest races of his post-collegian career for this early in the season on Saturday at the Jamaican International Invitational in Kingston. Peterson ran a 1:47.51, placing second by only 12 hundredths of a second to Kenya's Justus Koech.

 

Modesto Relays

Tiger post-collegian Christian Cantwell won his third-consecutive men's shot put title on Saturday, throwing 68-8 (20.93m) at the Modesto Relays in Modesto, Calif.

 

Big 12 Championships Next Weekend

Next Friday marks the first of three days of the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas. Some Tigers will leave for the event on Wednesday, with the remaining departing on Thursday, all juggling class-finals week at the same time.
