March 1, 2006

Box Score

Wichita, Kan. - In their first midweek game of the season, the Missouri softball team (5-6) held off Wichita State (9-5), 1-0, at Wilkins Field in Wichita, Kan. Fighting a 16 mph wind that blew straight in, the Tigers notched four hits, including two doubles, to end their 12 inning hitless streak.

Hitting from the two-hole, junior outfielder Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.) came up with Missouri's first hit of the game. Bowers ripped a first inning, standup double to centerfield to reach second and advanced home on cleanup hitter Micalea Miner's third double of the season. The top of the inning came to a close after junior third baseman Amanda Jo White (Tallmadge, Ohio) struck out swinging on a pitch from Wichita State righty Margo Pruis.

From the circle, Missouri ace Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) hurled a complete seven innings, fanning three batters and allowing only two hits.

Missour's 1-0 shutout is its second of the season and gives the Tigers a 11-2 lead in the all-time series with Wichita State.

The Tiger softball team will travel to Springfield, Mo., Friday, March 3, for the fifth annual Coaches Against Cancer Tournament where they will play games against in-state schools Missouri State, SEMO, UMKC and Saint Louis University. Missouri will open tournament play Friday night with a game against SEMO at 6:30 p.m. (CST) on Missouri State Softball Field.
