
Soccer Seeks Fifth-Straight Win Against College of Charleston Tonight

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Missouri Tigers will face the College of Charleston tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Walton Stadium in search of their fifth straight victory. As part of Local Youth Soccer Day, any child aged 13 and under who wears his/her local soccer jersey will receive free admission with the purchase of a regularly priced adult ticket. The Tigers will participate in an autograph session following the game, so bring your favorite Tiger soccer gear.
BATTLING THE ELEMENTS Missouri's game against North Dakota State on Sept. 13 was cancelled due to lighning in the area. The two teams waited through a two and a half hour rain delay following the first half only to have the game called because of lightning and rain. Under NCAA rules, a game must last 70 minutes before it counts toward a team's record. No reschedule date is set.
GOALS GALORE After not finding the back of the net in their first two games, the Tigers now have 16 goals on the season, including 12 in the last two games. In Mizzou's match with Arkansas State on Sept. 8, the Tigers posted a 7-0 win and broke the school's single-game record for assists with 10. Junior Aria Hudetz scored two goals in the game while senior Amber Swinehart, junior Lauren Vineyard, sophomore Anne Baxter and freshmen Carolina Pohl and Mo Redmond also notched goals. Missouri outshot the Lady Indians 37-9 in the contest.
The Tigers continued their offensive onslaught against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sept. 11 in Iowa City, Iowa with a 5-0 win. Mizzou scored early and often in the game, as Swinehart scored less than three minutes into the match and three minutes later, Redmond posted her second goal of the season. Swinehart had two goals on the day and senior Jennifer Nobis and freshman Ashley Hamblin scored as well. Nobis also had two assists in the game.
AWARDS ABOUND For the second week in a row, the Big 12 Conference named a Tiger one of its Players of the Week. Freshman Mo Redmond earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors after posting five points in Missouri's two games. In Mizzou's 7-0 win over Arkansas State on Sept. 8, Redmond scored her first collegiate goal in the 66th minute and recorded her first assist less than two minutes later on sophomore Anne Baxter's goal. Against Iowa on Sept. 11, Redmond again found the back of the net as the Tigers easily put away the Hawkeyes 5-0.
LEADING THE WAY Four Tigers find themselves ranked in the top five in Big 12 Conference statistics, as of Sept. 12. Senior Jennifer Nobis leads the league in assists per game (1.0), is second in total assists (five), tied for second in points per game (1.8) and tied for fourth in total points (nine). Senior Amber Swinehart tops the conference in game winning goals (three), tied for second in goals (four) and tied for third in goals per game (0.67). Junior Aria Hudetz is tied for second with Swinehart in goals (four) and is tied for third in goals per game (0.67) and total points (nine). Sophomore goalie Laura Buehrig leads the Big 12 in save percentage (.903), is second in total saves (28) and saves per game (4.67) and is fourth in goals against average (0.53)
IN THE RANKINGS Missoui finds itself ranked in both the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz Central Region rankings for the week of Sept. 5-12. In the NSCAA/adidas ranking, Mizzou falls in at No. 9 behind Texas A&M, Nebraska, Kansas, Tennessee, Colorado, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. Colorado College, Saint Louis University and SMU are all tied at No. 10.
In the Soccer Buzz poll, Missouri is ranked No. 7 behind Texas A&M, Texas, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Kansas and Tennessee. Oklahoma State, Saint Louis, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Colorado, Iowa State, Colorado College and SMU round out the top 15.
RECORD WATCH As of Sept. 16, five Tigers find themselves ranked in the top 10 in Missouri's career recordbook. Senior Jennifer Nobis is tied for third in game winning goals (eight), fourth in shots (191) and shots on goal (91) and fifth in points (71), goals (26) and assists (19). Senior Amber Swinehart is tied for seventh in game winning goals (four), tied for ninth in shots on goal (45) and ranks 10th in shots (101); senior Erica Pusch is ninth in games started (62) and shot on goal percentage (.538); junior Aria Hudetz ranks seventh in shot on goal percentage (.551) and sophomore goalkeeper Laura Buehrig finds herself tied for fourth in wins (11) and shutouts (four), fifth in games started (24), saves (99) winning percentage (.524) and minutes in goal (2101:15) and sixth in games played (24).
ABOUT COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON The College of Charleston is 1-3 on the season and picked up its first win on Sunday, Sept. 11 with a 2-0 victory over Florida Atlantic in the College of Charleston Classic. The Cougars have scored three goals in their four games, as three different players have found the back of the net in 2005.
MU vs. THE COUGARS Missouri will face the Cougars for the first time on Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
ABOUT CAL POLY As of Sept. 12, Cal Poly is ranked No. 17 in the latest NSCAA/adidas poll with a 5-0-1 record on the season. This past weekend, the Mustangs posted a 4-1 win over San Jose State on Sept. 9 and a 3-0 victory over Fresno State on Sept. 11. Both Mizzou and Cal Poly have played Arizona and Purdue this season, with the Mustangs notching a 0-0 tie with Arizona and a 1-0 win over Purdue. Mizzou lost 2-0 to Arizona to open the season and defeated Purdue 2-1.
Junior Sharon Day paces the Cougars with 12 points on five goals and two assists while senior Becky Clark has four goals on the year. Senior keeper Liz Hill posts a .889 save percentage and has two shutouts in Cal Poly's six games.
MU vs. THE MUSTANGS The Tigers and Mustangs have met twice, with each team picking up a win. In 1999, the last time the teams met, Mizzou picked up a 3-1 win at the California Classic.
10TH ANNIVERSARY OF TIGER SOCCER The 2005 season marks the 10th season of women's soccer at Missouri. In those 10 years, all under the direction of current head coach Bryan Blitz, the Tigers have a 93-90-6 (.509 winning percentage) overall record.
ON THE 2005 SCHEDULE After home contests against the College of Charleston and Cal Poly, the Tigers begin Big 12 play with home games against No. 15 Texas A&M on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. and Baylor on Sunday Sept. 25. at 1:00 p.m.
Also on the home schedule in 2005 is non-conference opponent Colorado College, as well as Big 12 foes Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas. Mizzou will also travel to Iowa State, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas Tech and Kansas to round out Big 12 play.
