Columbia, Mo. -
The Missouri Tigers continued pre-season fall camp today with their first morning workout, held in helmets and shorts at Faurot Field. The practice began at 8:15 a.m. and ended just before 11 a.m. and saw another spirited practice session by Head Coach Gary Pinkel's squad.
Just a few highlights from 7-on-7 passing drills included:
- QB Brandon Coleman completion to WR Chris Crosby for 10+ yard gains on consecutive plays...
- CB Marcus King grabbed an interception and likely would have gone for a score...
- QB Chase Patton hooked up with TE Brian Barmann on a gain of 20 yards...
- QB Chase Daniel connected with WR Jerrill Humphrey for a nice gain on a slant play, and then later hit WR Adam Casey for a big 20+ yard gain...
- QB Brad Smith hit TE Martin Rucker for a gain of around 25 yards...
Highlights from 11-on-11 situations included:
- DE Xzavie Jackson got into the backfield and caused a fumble on the first play against the #1 offense...
- QB Brad Smith hit WR Will Franklin several times, including one for around 15 yards on a nice read and the other going for around 20 yards on a seam route. Smith later hit WR Sean Coffey for a nice play of around 15 yards...
- TB Marcus Woods had a gain of over 15 yards on a nice-looking counter play...
From an injury standpoint, LB Dedrick Harrington and LB Van Alexander wore red jerseys today, but participated in all drills. Director of Sports Medicine Rex Sharp characterized both guys as doing very well and ready for full go, just that the jerseys are precautionary measures as both recover from off-season surgeries (shoulder for Harrington; foot for Alexander). LB Emmett Morris, Jr. and DL DeMarcus Scott both had on red jerseys today, but for minor things. WR Greg Bracey was held out of drills as he continues to recover from a bout with mononucleosis. DL Herman King was slowed by an injury in his groin area, and TB Earl Goldsmith had to leave practice injury with an injury to his left knee, and is listed as day-to-day at this point.
News and Notes
- It was funny today during the player interview portion of the day (players do most of their interviews during camp around the lunch period) to see senior co-captain Calvin Washington bust out laughing when he came upon his younger brother, Chad, who was giving his first interview as a Tiger. Calvin had fun clowning around, trying to make Chad laugh, but the younger Washington seemed to keep his cool.
- Also, WR Sean Coffey left practice a little early due to some cramping in his body. He got treated quickly and was fine afterward. Speaking of cramps, S Jason Simpson was seen drinking pickle juice going to the lunchroom today. He said that it is supposed to help him from cramping up.
- It was also very good to see Jerrill Humphrey return to camp after missing Monday due to the passing of a cousin. This young man has had a rough time lately with loss among his family and friends, so it's great to see him back and in good spirits.
- Missouri was visited today by Mike Newsome, who is a representative with Nike. He was in town to show Director of Equipment Operations Don Barnes and the Tiger coaching staff some of the gear that MU will be getting for the 2006-07 school year. Barnes said that they had some very cool stuff to display.
- The 2005 Missouri Football Media and Recruiting Guide, originally scheduled to be out by now, was held back after the tragic death of Aaron O'Neal in July. It was decided to stop production of the book in order to be able to pay tribute to Aaron, and the revised version being printed by Walsworth Publishing is scheduled to be out soon. Hopes were to receive some copies in time for Sunday's Fan Day event, but if they aren't in by then, be sure to check back the next week, as copies will be available at the Tiger Team Store.
- Practice resumes with another single workout in the morning at Faurot Field Wednesday. The team will don pads for the first time on Thursday morning. Be sure to stay tuned to mutigers.com for continuing practice reports throughout fall camp.
