Columbia, Mo. -
The Missouri Tigers held their first major scrimmage of fall camp today at Faurot Field, and the two-hour session showed many exciting big plays on both sides of the ball.
Offensively, the #1 unit had a good day overall, as QB Brad Smith threw for two TDs and had several impressive runs. Smith hit WR William Franklin for a 13-yard TD strike early on, and later in the day he connected with WR Brad Ekwerekwu from 10 yards out for another score. He also hooked up with TE Martin Rucker for 25 yards, WR Sean Coffey a couple of times, and TE DeQuincy Howard for a 25-yard strike. Smith also connected again with Ekwerekwu for 23 yards on a 3rd-and-long play, and again with Franklin for 25 more yards later on. TB Marcus Woods and TB Tony Temple both had a handful of nice runs to complement the passing attack, with Woods' longest going for around 13 yards and Temple's going for around 18 yards.
The #2 offensive unit also had several highlights, as QB Brandon Coleman threw for 2 TDs on the day. His first was a 21-yard TD to WR Tommy Saunders that capped a brilliant drive that came against the #1 defense. In that drive, Coleman connected with Howard over the middle for 23 yards on 3rd down, and with WR Jason Ray for another 10 yards prior to his TD strike. TB Jimmy Jackson also had a solid 14-yard run during the possession. Coleman later hit WR Jerrill Humphrey for 23 yards and another TD.
QB Chase Patton had several nice plays on the day, as he hit WR Arnold Britt for 20 yards and later for 27 yards on 3rd & long as Britt made a nice sliding catch over the middle. The duo later connected again, this time for 30 more yards. Patton also hit TE Brian Barmann for 12 yards over the middle, as Barmann made the catch of fall camp to this point, as he reached back behind his head on the ball thrown behind him, and grabbed the ball with one hand and secured it as he was tackled to the ground.
QB Chase Daniel also had a big day in his first Tiger scrimmage, as he had several big plays, including an 80-yard TD pass to WR Arnold Britt. On the play, Daniel bobbled a low snap, scooped the ball up and scrambled from the pocket to avoid the rush. As he scrambled to the right, he saw Britt breaking free down the right sideline, and he hit Britt in stride nearly 50 yards down the field, as Britt eluded a couple of tackles to take it the distance for the score. Daniel also hit WR Lucas Null for 23 yards on a nifty scramble and find, WR Chris Crosby for 18 yards down inside the 5-yardline, and he also ran for a gain of around 25 yards on a 3rd down scramble. Reserve TB Kevin Duncan had several nice runs, and capped his day with a 3-yard TD run.
Defensively, the #1 squad fared well for the most part. Individually, LB Dedrick Harrington stood out with several big plays, including the only turnover of the day, when he stepped in front of a pass and returned it for 20 yards before being hauled down. Harrington also had several big hits throughout the day. QB sacks were registered on the day by DL Jamar Smith, DL Tarrell Corby (two), DL George Lane (which went for a safety) and DL Marvin Williams.
In the kicking game, P Matt Hoenes had the best day, as he hit numerous punts over 40 yards, with one going for nearly 60 yards. PK Adam Crossett made field goals of 22, 25, 35 and 40 yards late in the scrimmage, with his only miss coming from 44 yards out. PK Scott Russell also made most of kicks, as he connected from 22, 25 and 40 yards away. Both kickers were perfect on their PAT attempts.
Practice resumes Wednesday with the third of four days of two-a-days. Be sure to stay tuned to www.mutigers.com for more practice reports.
