Max Scherzer Named to Academic All-District Team

Missouri sophomore right-hander Max Scherzer has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII Baseball Team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Chesterfield, Mo. native has a 3.23 GPA as an accounting major at Missouri.
Scherzer is 7-2 on the season and leads the Big 12 Conference in ERA (1.32), strikeouts (107) and opponents' batting average (.141). His ERA is fifth best in the nation and his is sixth in strikeouts nationally.
Last Friday, he recorded his first career complete game, as he allowed just one run on four hits and struck out nine against No. 5 ranked Nebraska. Earlier this season, he was part of a combined no-hitter against Texas Tech, the first no-hitter at Missouri since 1981. Scherzer pitched the first seven innings against the Red Raiders on April 1, striking out a career-high 14 batters.
He was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association National Pitcher of the Week, along with a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week on April 4, following the no-hit performance.
Scherzer has been invited to the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials in June. He has also been named to the watch list for the Xanthus Dick Howser Award, the Golden Spikes Award, the Clemons Award and the Wallace Award.
Mizzou (32-16, 12-9 Big 12) hosts Kansas this weekend at Taylor Stadium in the final home series of the 2005 season. Scherzer will be on the mound in the series opener at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The second game of the series is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, with the weekend set to conclude at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
