AUSTIN, Texas - - In the series opener of top 20 teams, No. 14 Mizzou fell to No. 1 Texas by a score of 4-1 in Austin, Texas on Friday night. The game was tied at one before a three-run eighth inning gave the Longhorns the lead and eventual victory.
After the game's first batter, the Tigers (30-12, 10-6) had put one run on the board. However, they would be the lone run scored for MU on Friday night.
Junior Zane Taylor gave MU an early lead with a home run to lead off the game. Taylor sent the third pitch of the game from Kyle McCulloch over the wall in right field. The homer was the first of the season for Taylor.
The 1-0 lead held in tact until the Longhorns scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a 2-out hit by Seth Johnston, driving in Robby Hudson with the game tying run.
Texas (36-8, 12-6) would take the lead with a three-run eighth inning. All three runs were scored with two outs in the inning, making all four runs scored by UT coming with two outs.
The first run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly and to give the Longhorns the lead. They would add to that lead as Chance Wheeless connected for a two-run single up the middle, to make it a 4-1 Texas lead.
The Longhorns would hold on to the three-run lead and take the victory.
Sophomore Max Scherzer pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. He walked four and struck out three. It was only the third game this season that Scherzer allowed more than one run and the seven hits for the Longhorns match a season high against Scherzer, who also gave up seven in his first start of the season against Winthrop.
Game two of the weekend series is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Disch-Falk Field. Sophomore Nathan Culp (6-1) is scheduled to take the mound for Mizzou, while sophomore Randy Boone (4-3) will be on the hill for the Longhorns.
Saturday's game, along with all of MU's games can be heard on KTGR Radio 1580 AM in Columbia or on the World Wide Web at www.KTGR.com.
