MANHATTAN, Kan. - - After scoring at least 10 runs in each of the last nine games, Missouri found itself in a pitching dual in its Big 12 Conference opener against Kansas State on Friday in Manhattan, Kan. The Tigers defeated KSU 3-1 to extend its winning streak to 10 games.
Each team put a run on the board in the first inning with the Tigers scoring a run on a double by sophomore Hunter Mense, which drove in junior Derek Chambers. Chambers was 1-for-4 on the night, to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Kansas State's run scored in the bottom of the first was the first run allowed by MU starting pitcher, sophomore Max Scherzer in his last five starts. That run would be the only one Scherzer would allow in seven innings of work. He gave up just three hits, struck out eight and walked two.
Scherzer recorded the win to move to 5-1 on the season. After taking a loss in his first start of the year, Scherzer has picked up a win in each of his last five starts.
Mizzou (18-4, 1-0 Big 12) would add a run in the top of the third and scored one in the top of the eighth inning, when sophomore Hunter Mense scored on a play in which KSU committed two errors.
Junior Taylor Parker pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs and just one hit to record his second save of the season and just the third save on the year for Mizzou.
The three runs scored by MU was the lowest run total on the season. The previous low was four scored in the loss to Winthrop on Feb. 17.
Game two of the three-game series between Mizzou and KSU is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday in Manhattan. The final game of the weekend will take get underway at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All of MU's games can be heard on KTGR 1580 AM in Columbia and on the World Wide Web at www.ktgr.com.
