Columbia, Mo. - Mizzou Strength and Conditioning Coach Pat Ivey announced on Thursday that four Tiger student-athletes have earned National Strength and Conditioning All America Honors. This great honor was awarded to Tyron Woodley (Sr., Wrestling) Shea Swoboda (Sr. Women's Soccer), Beau Viehmann (Sr. Football) and Jennifer Bennett (Sr. Track and Field).
"This honor is intended to recognize collegiate student-athletes whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning," Ivey said. "These outstanding young people are also being recognized for their academic and personal accomplishments and their integrity as student-athletes."
Viehmann (Sr., Owensville, MO) has showcased his strong work ethic and passion for the game of football the last four years at Mizzou. The tailback that can squat 576 lbs., and post a 34.4 inch vertical jump was named a team captain last season by vote of his Tiger teammates.
Ivey said in his recommendation of Viehmann that "Beau was awarded a scholarship in 2004 and was voted a team captain. He is a classic combination of intelligence, heart, intensity, inspiration and leadership."
Woodley (Sr., Ferguson, MO), who just wrapped up his career at Mizzou with a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships last week, was nominated by Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning Shannon Turley. Woodley put up an amazing 301 pounds on bench press, which is almost twice his body weight of 165.
Turley noted in his nomination of Woodley that "Tyron tore his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) as a redshirt and worked extensively to overcome this injury to set personal records and reach his athletic potential. He was the first Big 12 Conference champion at Mizzou, an All-American, a three-year captain and is the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)."
Bennett (Sr., Ashland, MO) is the Mizzou indoor and outdoor record holder in the women's pole vault. She was both an All-American and Big 12 Champion in 2003 in the event with the aide of a vertical jump of over 27 inches.
"Jennifer is the most dedicated, hard working athlete I have trained," Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning Antwan Floyd said in his nomination of Bennett. "She never misses an opportunity to improve and comes into the weight room with complete focus everyday. That along with her athletic ability creates a great combination."
Swoboda (Sr., Kansas City, MO) has played a vital role on the Mizzou women's soccer team the last four years. A powerful presence as a forward for the Tigers, Swoboda was a team captain both as a junior and senior while finishing her career with 13 goals and four assists.
Floyd, who also nominated Swoboda, said that "Shea holds team records for every Olympic lift and vertical jump on our soccer team. Her dedication and passion for strength and conditioning is second to none. She has earned the title of Team Captain (as a junior and senior) because of her great intensity and enthusiasm."
