Columbia, MO - Picking up their second consecutive home victory, the #69 Mizzou tennis team defeated Dartmouth, 5-2. In a match that tested the Tigers' depth, as two of Mizzou's top six players were sidelined by illness, Missouri found the grit to hold up against one of the Ivey League's top programs.
Before a sizable home crowd, Mizzou and Dartmouth battled back and forth to win the meet's six singles matches. The Tigers dropped close contests at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Jayme Ahmed defeated #120 Katka Sevcikova (7-5, 6-4) and Lindsay Winingham bested Erika Josbena (6-4, 7-6 (5).
Mizzou came back picking up tight wins at No. 3 and No. 4 as Tiger Yelena Olshanskaya topped Margaret Fitchet (6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) and Carolyn Kramer defeated Maggie Suydam (7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-4). Helping clinch the Tiger victory, Charlotte Bellis bested Kerry Snow with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Leaving the meet prematurely, the No. 5 match between Mary Barry and Megan Zebroski was suspended with a 6-3, 2-6, 3-0 default so Dartmouth could catch its flight.
Aiding the Mizzou cause, the Tigers picked up two doubles wins. Playing in the No. 1 spot, Sevcikova and Kramer paired to defeat Zebroski and Winingham 8-5, while No. 3 teammates Bellis and Barry bested Suydam and O'Rourke 8-5.
"This was a lot closer than the 5-2 score would indicate," Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "While we played brave and had some great individual performances, my hat is off to Dartmouth. They (Dartmouth) played smart and composed tennis giving nothing away for free. I have little doubt they'll have a good year."
Hitting the road next weekend, the Tigers travel to Nebraska to take on the Creighton and Nebraska. Mizzou faces the Blue Jays on Fri., Feb. 11 at 3:00 p.m., and take on the Cornhuskers on Sat., Feb. 12 at 2:00 p.m. The Tigers return to the Green Tennis Center the following week to host Murray State and Iowa State.
