Lincoln, Neb. - The University of Missouri women's swimming and diving team ended its 2004-05 regular season in rousing fashion this afternoon, as it posted a thrilling 153-147 win at Nebraska.
In a dual that came down to the last events, Mizzou came from behind and won the final two races to claim the victory. MU trailed entering the final two events, but Amy Charley came up with a huge win in the 200 individual medley, winning in a season-best time of 2:07.15, despite swimming in the outside lane.
Charley's win set the stage for a winner-take-all 400 freestyle relay, with the winner of the event winning the dual. Head Coach Brian Hoffer threw out a team of Lindsay Palbykin, Liz Schoborg, Amanda Morford and Shannon Hogan and the quartet responded with a two-second win (3:28.18 to Nebraska's 3:30.87) to give MU the team victory.
Mizzou's win pushed the Tigers to 7-2 overall on the season, and 3-1 in Big 12 action. Just as impressive was the fact that the Tigers handed Nebraska (8-1) its only loss of the season, and MU's win prevented Nebraska from becoming the first Husker team in history to go undefeated.
"What a great way to end the regular season," said Head Coach Brian Hoffer. "Our team was really excited to swim today, and we had a lot of things going against us - a great Nebraska crowd that was going crazy, it was senior day for them, and they were going for the undefeated season. But we kept finding ways to handle the pressure and get it done," he said.
Mizzou got wins in 9-of-16 events overall on the day, including the 200 medley relay (1:45.47 - Amanda Morford, Mariona Costa, Liz Schoborg, Shannon Hogan); 100 backstroke (57.68 - Amanda Morford); 200 butterfly (2:02.91 - Becca Dawson); 50 freestyle (23.89 - Shannon Hogan); 100 freestyle (52.23 - Lindsay Palbykin); 200 backstroke (2:04.38 - Sarah Menefee); 200 breaststroke (2:19.78 - Mariona Costa); 200 individual medley (2:07.15 - Amy Charley); 400 freestyle relay (2:07.15 - Palbykin, Schoborg, A. Morford, Hogan).
Up next for the Tiger men and women will be the Big 12 Swimming and Diving championships, to be held Feb. 23-26 in College Station, Texas.
