COLUMBIA, Mo.--Despite some inclement weather, a shopping-holiday weekend, and the season's final collegiate football weekend, fans of Mizzou volleyball was not stopped in supporting the then-No. 10 Tigers last weekend in their first-and-second round matches. Combined the two crowd attendance figures totaled 8,784, the largest of any of the 16 sub-regionals in the country. The Tigers hosted Missouri State in the first round match on Friday, with an overwhelming 6,294 fans packing the Hearnes Center.
2,490 Tiger fans attended Mizzou's second-round match-up with Arkansas.
"I don't think the fans ever allowed us to get back in it, " said Arkansas Head Coach Chris Poole after their loss to the Tigers on Saturday. "The fans were outstanding, and when we got down, they helped keep us down. We were not able to get back into the groove at all and that's not to say what they were doing on the court wasn't terrific too but we just didn't get our game faces on. The fans were outstanding keeping them motivated and keeping them into it. The most frustrating thing is to not be able to get control of things on our side of the net."
Missouri jumped to sixth on the yearly national report as reported Monday by Wisconsin SID Diane Nordstrom. Mizzou's 2,670 fan-per-match average is 80 percent higher than last year's average of 1,460. A total of 40,052 fans attended the 15 home dates. Missouri only trailed Hawaii (7,302), Nebraska (4,323), Minnesota (3,883), Wisconsin (3,758), and Washington (2,888) on the list.
The now-No. 8 Tigers will face No. 6 Hawaii in the regional semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 3 p.m., central, in State College, Pa. Should the Tigers win, they would play the winner of No. 17 Tennessee and No. 2 Penn State on Saturday at 3 p.m., central, aired live on ESPNU.
