
Tigers Win Third Dual of the Day

Hampton, Va. - Wrestling in back-to-back duals the 12th ranked Missouri wrestling team advanced to the third place finals of the 25th annual Virginia Duals after handing Rider a 37-9 loss. Sophomore Ben Askren tied the current Missouri consecutive wins record set at 24 with his victory over Sean Jenkins. The Tiger team improves to 12-2 on the season and will take on Cal State Bakersfield at 7:30 p.m. (CT) in the Hampton Coliseum.
Eight members of Missouri's 10-man lineup won their individual bouts against the Broncs of Rider. Redshirt freshman Tim Kephart opened the dual at 125 pounds with a 5-4 decision over Ryan Smith and 20th ranked Tyler McCormick followed at 133 pounds with a 16-3 major decision over Tim Harner.
Wrestling at 149 pounds No. 16 Cody Greene improved to 22-4 on the season with a 10-1 major decision over Michael Palma. The Tigers forfeited at 157 pounds giving way to Tyron Woodley's (165 pound) 99th career win, recorded with a fall over Ryan Cunningham in 6:48.
For the second time of the season, All-American Askren followed Woodley's fall with one of his own. His 17th fall of the season, Askren drove both shoulders of Sean Jenkins into the mat in a time of one minute flat. With the win, Askren tied the current Missouri consecutive wins record of 24 set during the 1982-83 season by Khris Whelan. Also, with his fall Askren tied his 2003-04 season falls record and is two shy from setting an all new Missouri season falls record. The current record holder is heavyweight Kevin Herron. Herron set the record his senior season (2002-03) pinning an impressive 18 of his opponents. On his career, Askren has 34 falls to his name and is two pins away from cracking into the top-three of the Missouri career falls record list.
The Tigers continued their five-match win streak with victories by Matt Pell at 184 pounds (9-1), Jeff Foust at 197 pounds (10-2) and Chase Wetenkamp at heavyweight (fall, 1:22). Wetenkamp's fall was the second fastest of the dual.
Missouri's win over Rider ties the Tigers and Broncs in the all-time record book. Each school now holds one win to its name.
