SHE'S A KEEPER The Big 12 Conference named sophomore goalkeeper Laura Buerhrig its Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 6 after leading the Tigers to two wins last weekend in the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge.
Against Indiana on Friday, Buehrig posted the fourth shutout of her career and her second in as many games in Mizzou's 2-0 victory. In Sunday's 2-1 win over Purdue, Buehrig notched eight saves, just one short of her career high, to help the Tigers to a perfect 2-0 mark at home.
Buehrig currently ranks first in the Big 12 in total saves (22), is tied for first in shutouts (two) and stands second in saves per game (5.50) and save percentage (.880). Her goals against average (0.71) also ranks fifth in the conference.
Buehrig's award marks the first for a Missouri student-athlete in 2005 and the second of the last three awards, dating back to former Tiger Karen Bauer's honor in the final week of 2004.
TIGERS ON THE MOVE Missouri is ranked No. 10 in the latest NSCAA/adidas Central Region rankings. The top five sports go to fellow Big 12 programs Texas A&M, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas and Colorado, respectively, while Oklahoma falls in at No. 8.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION After not finding the back of the net in its first two games of the season, Mizzou scored two goals in each of its games in the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge. In the 2-0 victory over Indiana on Sept. 2, senior Jennifer Nobis scored the Tigers' first goal of the season when her left-footed blast from the right side of the box eluded the Indiana keeper. In the 77th minute of play, junior Aria Hudetz corralled Nobis' pass and fired a 25-yard shot into the upper netting.
In Missouri's 2-1 win over Purdue on Sept. 4, Hudetz scored her second goal of the season in the 49th minute after Nobis sent a ball to freshman Caroline Pohl, whose backpass found Hudetz 15-yards out. Hudetz nailed the ball past Purdue's keeper for a 1-0 Tiger lead. After Purdue netted an equalizer seven minutes later, senior Amber Swinehart hit the game-winner in the 77th minute off a pass from junior Lauren Vinyard.
