MIZZOU LOOKS TO END LOSING STREAK SATURDAY IN BORDER SHOWDOWN WITH KANSAS
The Missouri women's basketball team (7-12, 1-7 Big 12) concludes a two-game homestand, as well as a week off from competition, with a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday against archrival Kansas.
The winner of Saturday's game will earn 1.5 points for its school in the Missouri/Kansas Border Showdown, presented by the Midwest Ford Dealers. Kansas currently holds a 10.0-5.5 lead in the third-annual season-long series, in which the various rival sports programs earn points for head-to-head wins.
Missouri won the inaugural Border Cup with a dominating 32.0-8.5 win in 2002-03, while Kansas won last year's series, 21.5-18.5.
LAST TIME OUT: #15 TEXAS 71, MIZZOU 52
Jamie Carey scored 17 of her 22 points in the first half, and No. 15 Texas tied a season high with nine 3-pointers to beat Missouri 71-52 Saturday.
COMING OFF THE BYE...
Missouri is 3-4 in the game following its annual mid-week bye (there was no bye scheduled in 2002). Saturday will mark the first time in eight years that the Tigers have been at home following their bye. Here are the results of games the last several years following a week off from play:
Date Opponent Result Jan. 24, 2004 at Kansas W, 76-49 Jan. 19, 2003 at Iowa State W, 86-55 Jan. 27, 2001 at Nebraska W, 65-58 Jan. 15, 2000 at Texas L, 80-64 Jan. 23, 1999 at Kansas State L, 79-67 Feb. 15, 1998 at Kansas State L, 66-57 Feb. 11, 1997 vs. Iowa State L, 71-54
THE KANSAS SERIES
The series with Kansas is the oldest among schools that Missouri continues to compete against, and Saturday's 66th meeting will tie with Kansas State as the longest-running most against any opponent. The two schools differ on the all-time series record. Kansas has it at 35-31 in favor of the Jayhawks, while Missouri does not recognize a 1973 meeting before the Tiger program was recognized as a varsity sport at MU.
The Tigers are 14-13 in Columbia against their archrivals, and saw a four-game home winning streak snapped last season in a 55-52 loss. Junior G LaToya Bond was out with a broken foot for that game, and Mizzou exacted revenge in Lawrence two weeks later.
Two weeks ago, Kansas took a 63-61 win after holding Mizzou to just one basket in the game's final 7 minutes.
SCOUTING THE JAYHAWKS
Since posting its first Big 12 Conference win under first-year coach Bonnie Henrickson against the Tigers, Kansas has gone 1-2. After following up the Missouri win with a road win at Colorado, the Jayhawks lost by 11 at Nebraska and by 16 on Wednesday at home vs. Oklahoma.
Junior Crystal Kemp leads KU in scoring (14.5 ppg), yet in Big 12 games the scoring banner is being carried by junior Erica Hallman's 12.0 point per game - 0.2 ppg better than Kemp, who also leads the Jayhawks in rebounding (8.6 rpg).
IF IT'S SATURDAY, IT'S A HOME GAME
The schedule has certainly had an interesting look the last several weeks. Last Saturday's home game vs. Texas ended a five-game stretch that saw Mizzou on the road four times. It also started a stretch of three straight Saturdays at home for the Tigers.
MU is just 4-5 in its brand-new $75 million arena, yet it is scoring 14 more points a game at home (65.1 ppg vs. 51.6 ppg) than on the road, and is giving up eight fewer (61.9 ppg vs. 69.4 ppg) to its opponents. Not surprisingly, the Tigers are significantly better in every statistical category in the friendly confines, including the most important stat: the Tigers are just 1-7 on the road.
