COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri track and field team hosted the second day of the Tom Botts Invitational on Saturday. Weather conditions were a huge factor in the meet as a cold, windy rain took most of the competition by storm. The women's pole vault, men's shot put, and 1600-meter relay were cancelled due to the adverse conditions.
In the morning until early afternoon, the weather was bearable enough to hold most of the day's events.
Freshman Tipper O'Brien (Kirkwood, Mo.) finished as the number one collegian in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:54.27. Winning the event was Tiger volunteer assistant coach with a time of 3:53.28, Timothy Dunne who ran for the New York Athletic Club.
Junior Brandon Goebbert (Hinsdale, Ill.) won the men's decathlon with 6,305 points. The decathlon spanned the length of day two competition, as the decathlon's 110-meter hurdles and the 1500-meter run book ended the meet.
Junior Amanda Bales finished second in the women's 1500-meter run. Iowa State's Jessica Huff won the event by 25-hundredths of a second (4:28.20).
Senior Janae Strickland won the women's shot put with a throw of 48-6? (14.80m).
The Tigers swept the high jump events. Junior Jesse Sims took the male title, jumping 6 feet, 6? inches (2.00m). Junior Jenny Bybee won the female competition with a jump of 5-2?.
Junior Neville Miller was edged out by Notre Dame's Tom Chamney for the 800-meter gold. Miller timed in at 1:52.81.
Missouri's Holly Scherder was named Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet after winning the women's hammer throw competition yesterday with a throw of 195-4, a foot off her school record.
Notre Dame's Selim Nurudeen was named Outstanding Male Athlete of the Meet. Nurudeen tied the meet record in the 100-meter hurdles, winning with a time of 14.20.
The Tigers will wish for better conditions next weekend in Lincoln, Neb., as Missouri will compete in the Nebraska Quadrangular next weekend. Colorado State, Indiana, Nebraska, and Missouri will compete in the meet.
