FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -
University of Missouri track and field student-athlete sophomore Ashley Patten finished eighth in the 800-meter at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. The sophomore earned her first all-American honor of her career and scored her first national team point for the Tigers.
Patten (Clarkston, Mich.) entered the race as the final qualifier with her time of 2:07.12 in Friday's preliminary round. She finished today's race with a time of 2:15.15.
"Our kids are trying to do, individually, what every team in team sports try to do, finish in the top ten in the country," said Dr. Rick McGuire, head track and field coach. "We had two that finished in eighth, top ten in the country. It's an amazing feat, and they know how proud we are of them, and I'm glad they'll both be back."
Patten won her first Big 12 Conference championship two weeks ago in the 800 with a time of 2:08.49, coming back from seventh place in the final 150 meters to take the title. Her time of 2:05.97 at last week's Cyclone Last Chance Qualifier gained her entry into the championship meet and propelled her to second place on Missouri's all-time performance list in the event.
The 800-meter has been Missouri's best event all-time as now the Tigers have earned 23 all-American honors in the event, covering men's and women's, indoor and outdoor seasons. Six times, Missouri women have earned all-American honors in the event at the indoor championships. The last female Tiger to achieve such an honor was Ashley Wysong, who in 2001 took sixth place in the nation in the event to achieve her third straight indoor all-American distinction.
Missouri's men and women both scored one point in the meet. Conrad Woolsey finished eighth yesterday in men's shot put to earn the Tigers' point on the men's side.
