
Second-Ranked Missouri Takes Win Over Michigan State

Cleveland, Ohio--Entering the National Duals as the second seed, Missouri opened the day with a win over No. 24 Michigan State (29-3). Taking nine of 10 wins, the Tigers will meet next with 11th-ranked Hofstra at 2 p.m. (CT) on mat three of the Cleveland State Convocation Center.
Starting the dual at 125-pounds, sophomore Austin DeVoe took an early lead with a takedown in the first period. Followed with an escape and takedown in the second period, opponent Craig Trombly was only able to score two escapes in the seven minute dual. With the final score at 8-2, Missouri took the three-point lead.
At 133-pounds, junior Paul Collum (11th-ranked) was back in action. Collum came to the duals with a 7-4 record only to improve to 8-4 after defeating Michigan State's Tony Greathouse 9-3. With four takedowns and a point for riding time, Collum helped the Tigers jump to 6-0.
Senior J.P. Reese (eighth-ranked) suffered his sixth loss of the season. Paired with ninth-ranked Andy Simmons, the two entered the second period tied at two. Simmons took the lead in the second period with a takedown and Reese chose down entering period number three. Despite a takedown and escape by Reese, Simmons managed a 7-5 win with an extra point given for riding time.
Sixth-ranked senior captain Jeremy Spates scored one of Missouri's two major decisions of the dual. Down by one point entering the third period, Spates landed a takedown and two-point nearfall over Ryan L'Amoreaux, with one point awarded for riding time. In the end, the final score was 11-8, helping the Tigers back to a six-point lead.
Weighing in at 157-pounds, senior captain Kenny Burleson (fourth-ranked) found the Tigers second major decision, with an 11-1 victory over Arsen Aleksanyan. With points awarded for three separate near falls, Burleson held Aleksanyan to only one escape.
Redshirt freshman Gabe Conaghan took the mat for the match at 165-pounds. Meeting with Michael Escobedo, Conaghan entered the second period with a one-point lead. By the end of seven minutes, Conaghan had a four-point lead over Escobedo and took Missouri's score to 16-3.
In his 11th-consecutive win, sixth-ranked redshirt freshman Ben Askren defeated 16th-ranked Anton Hall in an 8-5 decision. Tied at the conclusion of period two, Askren held Hall to five points earning an escape, takedown and one point for riding time.
After a disappointing loss to fifth ranked Blake Kaplan last weekend, redshirt freshman Matt Pell (ninth-ranked) found his 21st win of the season over Michigan State's Nate Mesyn. The two wrestlers entered the third period with no points on the board, but Pell was able to score a takedown, with Mesyn only managing an escape. Pell's 2-1 decision helped Missouri to a 19 point lead (22-3).
In a battle between two Jeff's, Missouri's sophomore Jeff Foust (10th-ranked) met with Michigan State's Jeff Clemens. Scoring an early two-point nearfall, with an escape in both the second and third periods, Foust took a 4-1 win.
The final match of the dual found senior heavyweight Mike Whitehead (ninth-ranked) in the center circle with 20th-ranked Michael Keenan. With several chances at a pin, Whitehead took back points and the win with the final score showing 8-1.
