Cantwell Tops Own World Leading Mark At Millrose Games

Feb. 7, 2004

NEW YORK - Former University of Missouri track and field athletes Christian Cantwell and Derrick Peterson competed Friday night in the 97th Annual Millrose Games in New York's Madison Square Garden. Cantwell took first place in the men's shot put event, and Peterson finished fifth in the 800-meter run. The event is the oldest running indoor track meet and draws some of the biggest names in the sport.

Current Missouri undergraduate assistant coach Christian Cantwell (Eldon, Mo.) won the four-man shot put event with a toss of 69 feet, 10 inches (21.28m) and marks the third time this year that the seven-time all-American has topped his own indoor personal best. Cantwell came into the meet as having 2004's world longest throw of 69 feet that occurred a week ago at Missouri's Tiger Classic. Cantwell defeated 2000 Olympic silver medallist Adam Nelson who took third and Reese Hoffa is in the top 10 in the world. Cantwell also entered into the weekend No. 4 in the IAAF World Shot Put Rankings.

"I thought it was a great venue," Cantwell said of the games. "The crowd was incredible and I was happy with their support. I think I'm in the right spot in my training for this time of the year and will it's progress will lead to good things in the future."

Tiger volunteer assistant Coach Derrick Peterson finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.73.

NBC will show coverage of the meet this afternoon between 2:00-3:30 p.m. For more information on Cantwell and Peterson, visit mutigers.com. Information on the meet can be found at verizonmillrosegames.com.
