SALT LAKE CITY, Utah.-- - The University of Missouri picked up its first loss of the season, as Utah downed the Tigers 3-0 (30-26, 30-21, 30-28) in the final match of the Utah Classic on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Mizzou defeated Washington State 3-0 (30-28, 31-29, 30-25). Lindsey Hunter and Shen Danru were each honored by being named to the All-Tournament Team.
Utah and Missouri entered the final match each undefeated in the Utah Classic. Utah never trailed in game one on its way to victory. The Utes had to come from behind in each of the next two games to knock out the Tigers.
Lisa Boyd led Missouri with 10 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Mary Lauren Smith followed with nine kills and Danru added eight. Lindsey Hunter had 33 assists and Jessica Vander Kooi and Danru led MU with eight digs.
Mizzou opened day two of the tournament with the three-game victory over Washington State. Danru recorded a double-double against the Cougars with 16 kills and 15 digs. She also added four service aces. Smith had 11 kills and Hunter had 39 assists.
The Tigers travel to Milwaukee, Wis next weekend for the Marquette Challenge. MU will open play in the tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Friday against Ohio.
