Jonesboro, Ark. - The University of Missouri men's golf team is in a tie for eighth place (just five strokes out of the Top 3) after the first two very windy rounds of the Arkansas State University Indian Classic. There are several teams in the hunt for a spot in the Top 3 as seven teams are within seven strokes of the third place spot, which is occupied by Louisville at 584.
The Tigers shot consistent rounds of 295 and 294 to finish with a total of 589. North Texas and Arkansas-Little Rock distanced themselves after the first day, tying for the lead at 575, giving them a nine-stroke advantage over the Cardinals of Louisville in third.
The Tigers top individual competitors through the first two rounds were junior David Jenkins and senior Cory Ewert. Jenkins shot rounds of 72 (which is even par) and 76 while Ewert fired a 75 and a 73 for a two-round total of 148. As tight as the team race is, the individual race is equally as packed.
Jenkins and Ewert are just five strokes out of the Top 10 and senior Chris Happ (who is in a tie for 37th place) is just six strokes out of the upper echelon with a two-round total of 149. Junior Brandon Knaub is also by no means out of contention either, as he is a tie for 43rd, just seven strokes off the Top 10 pace of 143. Knaub shot rounds of 73 and 77 for a total of 150. After shooting an opening round of 80, freshman Chris Mabry fired the best round of his young career with a 71 for a two-round total of 151, putting him in a tie for 50th.
This is the Tigers' final tune up before the Big 12 Championships, which will be played in Tulsa, Okla., on April 29-29th. The ASU tourney, which is being played in Jonesboro, Ark., at the Ridge Point Country Club, will conclude on Tuesday. Results should be available late Tuesday evening on www.mutigers.com.
