Columbia, Mo. - Dr. Glenn L. McElroy, an institution to the University of Missouri Athletic Department, passed away in Columbia Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Lenior Health Care Center.
Dr. McElroy was associated with Tiger Athletics for over 50 years as a team physician. A lifelong Central Missourian, Dr. McElroy profoundly impacted the lives of countless area residents and especially made significant contributions in the area of sports medicine, as he attended to the needs of student-athletes at Mizzou and elsewhere.
Dr. McElroy began his longstanding association with Mizzou Athletics in the 1950s, as an orthopaedic consultant to former MU team physician Dr. James Baker, whom McElroy succeeded in 1977. In 1991, Mizzou honored McElroy by awarding him the title of "Emeritus Team Physician," to thank him for his service. Further honoring his contributions to Mizzou, McElroy was inducted into the MU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996. Additionally, Mizzou's state-of-the-art sports medicine facility is named in his honor.
McElroy is a charter member of the Missouri Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame and has also been inducted into the Missouri Basketball Hall of Fame. He was named "Doctor of the Year' by the Boone County Medical Association in 1989, and in 1993 received the NATA President's Challenge Award.
McElroy received his undergraduate degree from Central Methodist College in Fayette in 1940. He earned his medical degree at Washington University in 1943, served with the Army Medical Corps from 1946-48, and completed his residency before launching his orthopaedic practice in Columbia in 1951.

Glenn L. McElroy, 85, of Columbia died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Lenoir Health Care Center.
Services were held Saturday, March 22, at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 S. Ninth St., with the Rev. Jim Bryan officiating.
Dr. McElroy was born March 2, 1918, in New Franklin to Glenn A. and Avanelle Burgin McElroy.
He married Mary Moore on May 13, 1947, in San Francisco, and she survives.
He graduated from Central Methodist College in Fayette and Washington University School of Medicine of St. Louis. He served with the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War.
He started a private medical practice in Columbia in 1951 and was the University of Missouri-Columbia Athletic Department team physician for over 40 years. He was also the co-founder of the Columbia Orthopedic Group and one of the founders of Columbia Regional Hospital.
He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church of Columbia.
Survivors also include a son, Glenn L. McElroy Jr., of Columbia; a daughter, Pam McElroy Sand of Alachua, Fla.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Fleeta Summers.
