
Mizzou Holds Groundbreaking for Brewer Fieldhouse

COLUMBIA, Mo. -
A crowd of 200 hundred students gathered to witness the official groundbreaking of the Rothwell Gymnasium and Brewer Fieldhouse Expansion and Renovation Project. City of Columbia and University of Missouri officials joined Missouri student leaders past and present in the momentous event. Among the dignitaries that attended were Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman, Missouri Chancellor Dr. Richard J. Wallace, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Catherine C. Scroggs, relatives of Chester Brewer, MSA President Brett Ordnung and members of the Board of Curators.
The ceremony host Director of Mizzou Rec Services and Facilities Diane Dahlmann recognized administrators, engineers and students that made the project possible. She was followed by 2001 MSA President Mark Bresnahan, who was instrumental in the start for the project. Dr. Scroggs then spoke and pointed out that the students of Missouri were the catalyst of the project, acknowledging the October 2001 student vote that would provide funding for the $43 million project. 2002 MSA President Mykael Wright then spoke on the hardwork and long hours that the staff put into making the project possible.
Dr. Wallace then pointed out how the Missouri campus has evolved into a major source of growth and revenue for the City of Columbia, thanking Mayor Hindman for his support. Dr. Wallace then thanked the Missouri athletic department for their input and research, thanking Athletic Director Michael Alden, Associate Athletic Director Sarah Reesman, Director of Project Management Gene McArtor and Swimming and Diving Head Coach Brian Hoffer.
Current MSA President Brett Ordnung reiterated the importance of the student voice in the development of Missouri as one the best universities in the country.
Everyone in attendance were encouraged to pick up a shovel and assist in the groundbreaking.
The swimming and diving team will benefit from the project with a new 8-lane, 50 meter competition pool. A state-of-the-art diving well, offices for the coaching staff, seating for spectators and new locker rooms. The target date for the completion of the project is in time for the 2004-05 swimming and diving season.
