
Tigers in third heading into final day of competition

Bloomington, Indiana - After two days of competition the University of Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams have taken solid control of third place. The women are in third behind Indiana University and Pittsburgh and the men are third behind Indiana and Pittsburgh.
In the morning session several Tigers were able to set personal bests. Sophomore David Darmitzel set two more personal bests today as he had best times in the 400-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly. Juniors Matt North and Amanda Morford both set new personal bests in the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman Lindsay Kraus set a new best in the 200-yard freestyle and junior Jacob Thomas finished with his best time in five years in the 100-yard backstroke.
In the diving well: Evan Watters was able bounce back from an injured ankle he suffered in yesterday's diving competition to finish in first place on the 1-meter board as fellow sophomore diver Aaron Wionzek added a fourth place finish. The female trio of Anna Massey, Nicole Frazier and Kim Massaro finished fifth, sixth and tenth on the 1-meter board
On the men's side: The 200-meter relay team of sophomore Chris Lukas, Matt North, senior Tyler Belanger and junior Ryan Searby finished fourth while the team of Jacob Thomas, senior Chris Musfeldt, sophomore Dan Buhr and freshman Chris Pontecore finished tenth.
In the 400-meter individual medley sophomore David Darmitzel finished fourth in the finals with his time of 4:29.99. Thomas and freshman Peter Willett scored points for the Tigers as well. In the bonus round of the 400 IM Missouri finished 1-2-3 as seniors Dustin McKnight, Eric Sullins and Stephen Darmitzel claimed the top spots.
In the 100-meter freestyle Tyler Belanger and David Darmitzel both finished in the top-16 scoring points for Missouri.
Ryan Searby and freshman Jason Lyons finished in the top-eight in the championship finals of the 200-meter freestyle. Sophomore Wade Pennington and Chris Musfeldt added points for Missouri finishing 10th and 15th respectively.
After finishing first in the preliminary heats of the 100-yard breaststroke, Missouri's Matt North was looking forward to a solid performance in his specialty event. In the finals, North finished second, just three tenths of a second off of first place. Musfeldt added an eighth place finish in the championship finals. Stephen Darmitzel and freshman Nate Zabel added to the Missouri total as they finished ninth and 15th respectively.
After qualifying for the Canadian Olympic trials last night, Chris Lukas kept rolling as he finished second in the 100-meter backstroke. Lukas' time of 56.19 seconds was seven one-hundredths of a second off of first place.
In the last event of the night the Tiger relay team of Lyons, Pennington, Buhr and Searby finished fourth in the 800-meter freestyle.
On the women's side: The women started Saturday evening off successfully as their 200-meter medley relay teams finished fifth and tenth.
In the 400-meter IM, the women had five swimmers score points for the team. Senior Rebecca Wolfe and junior Amanda Morford finished in the top-eight in the championship finals. Juniors Becca Dawson and Belinda Wood and senior Molly Christensen rounded out the top-16 places to score for MU. Freshmen Kim Gainey and Kyle Robinson both finished in the top-25 in the 400 IM.
Sophomore Liz Schoborg, Belinda Wood and Becca Dawson finished in the top-12 for Missouri. Schoborg finished fourth, Wood ninth and Dawson 11th.
In the 100-meter breaststroke junior Mariona Costa finished fifth with her time of 1:11. 64 while senior Sarah Lo finished eighth. Senior Ellen Borgo finished first in the consolation finals (ninth overall) and freshman Amy Charley finished 13th overall as she and Borgo added to the Tiger total.
In her specialty event Sarah Lo was able to finish in second place in the 100-meter backstroke. Amanda Morford, senior Shannon Hollsten and Amy Charley all finished in the top-10.
The women were able to finish sixth and ninth in their last event of the evening, the 800-meter freestyle relay.
