Columbia, Mo. - Until today, the Missouri women's swimming and diving team had only defeated the Kansas Jayhawks three times in 25 years. With today's victory, Missouri has now won the last four meetings with the Jayhawks.
The meet started out slow for the Tigers as Kansas finished 1-3 in the 200-yard medley relay leaving Mizzou to score in second place.
The Tigers immediately gained back the points and then some as they finished 1-2-3 in the 1000-yard freestyle. Senior Lizza Igoe finished first followed by freshman Kim Gainey in second and junior Megan Morford had a very impressive race after having knee surgery over the summer as she finished third.
Kansas, not letting Mizzou gain too much of a lead, won the next three events. KU finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.
Missouri put an end to the KU win streak as senior Rebecca Wolfe finished first in the 200-yard butterfly. Junior Becca Dawson finished third for the Tigers and junior Belinda Wood also scored points for the Tigers in the 200 butterfly as she finished fifth.
The diving team has become a consistent point generator for the women's team as the Tigers finished 2-3-5 on the 1-meter board. Junior Anna Massey finished second, freshman Kim Massaro finished third and sophomore Nicole Frazier added a fifth place finish as all three divers scored points on the 1-meter board.
After the diving events, Kansas proceeded to win the next two events, the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke.
Wanting to prevent another KU three-peat, junior Mariona Costa decided it was time for Mizzou to start making a comeback. Costa finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Amy Charley finished second and fellow freshman Lindsay Kraus finished fourth for the Tigers. Costa's first place finish in the 200 breaststroke sparked a rally by Mizzou as they finished won the next four events, sweeping two of them.
In the 500-yard freestyle, it was all Mizzou as the Tigers finished 1-2-3. Rebecca Wolfe finished first, Lizza Igoe followed closely behind Wolfe as she finished second and freshman Kim Gainey rounded out the top-three for MU.
Sophomore Liz Schoborg has continued to impress the Missouri coaches as she again had another solid performance today finishing first in the 100-yard butterfly.
At the conclusion of the first intermission, Missouri was down by three and was looking to score points fast as they only had three events left in the meet.
The women's diving team answered the call for points as they finished 1-2-3 on the 3-meter board. Nicole Frazier finished first, marking her first win of the season, Anna Massey finished second and Kim Massaro claimed the third place spot for the Tigers.
In the 200 IM, freshman Amy Charley came in as the youngest participant but was able to take the lead away from Kansas senior Meagen Himes and finish first with a time 2:08.09.
In the last event of afternoon, Kansas was able to out-touch Missouri to finish first, but the first place finish was not enough to take the lead as Missouri proceeded to finish second and third and scored enough points to keep the lead and win the meet.
"Coming off last night's victory against Truman State the girls were very tired and it looked like we were going to have a hard time against Kansas today, but our depth really stepped up today and won the meet for us. Anna, Nikki and Kim did a great job diving today, and I think their performance on the 3-meter board really turned this meet around for us," said Missouri Head Coach Brian Hoffer.
Up next for the Tigers is a men's meet against SIU-Carbondale in Carbondale, Ill. at 2:00 pm on November 8. The women's next meet is at home against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on November 14 at 5:00 pm.
