The University of Missouri Men and Women's Track and Field team finished competition at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb. today. Tiger senior Knut Sommerfeldt won his third career Big 12 title in the heptathlon.
Sommerfeldt was in second place at the start of the day. Sommerfeldt overtook the leader, Josef Karas of Kansas State, with his 60 meter hurdle time of 8.73. This is Sommerfeldt's first career indoor championship, Sommerfeldt is the two-time defending Big 12 Champion in the decathlon. Freshman Hans Uldal finished third and Brandon Goebbert finished eighth.
In the marquee event of the day, Nebraska's Carl Myerscough defeated Missouri's Christian Cantwell in the shot put. Myerscough threw 68'10.5" to win the event, Cantwell threw 66'4.5" and finished second. Tiger teammate, Russ Bell, finished third and two other Tigers, Bill Hobson and Adam Burla, also scored for the Tigers. In the women's shot put, junior Janae Strickland finished fourth in a talent ladent field.
On the track, the Tigers had an outstanding day. Sophomore Amanda Bales finished second in the mile and senior Timothy Dunne finished second in the 1,000 meter run. Freshman Ashley Patten finished fourth in the 800 meter run and Stewart Kimball also finished fourth in the men's 800 meter run.
The Tigers are in action next at the NCAA Qualifier in Ames, Iowa next Friday.
