Columbia, Mo. - University of Missouri senior linebacker Sean Doyle has been named one of 67 preliminary candidates for the prestigious Butkus Award, which is given annually to the nation's best collegiate linebacker.
Doyle, a native of Overland Park, Kan., is coming off a stellar 2001 season, in which he led Mizzou, and ranked 7th nationally, with 131 tackles. He was an honorable-mention All-Big 12 pick in 2001, and was named to the Dallas Morning News' All-Conference first team. Doyle was one of four Tigers selected as team captain for the 2002 season.
The Butkus Award Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on Oct. 17th, with three finalists being named on Nov. 14th. The winner will be announced on Dec. 13th, as voted on by a selection committee comprised of 29 of the nation's foremost national media members.
Created in 1985 by the Downtown Athletic Club or Orlando Inc., the Butkus Award is celebrating its 18th anniversary, and is named after one of the greatest middle linebackers in football history, Dick Butkus.
