COLUMBIA, Mo. - A four-run eighth inning powered Kansas State to a 5-3 win over Missouri in Friday's Big 12 Conference game at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field.
Kansas State improved to 24-23 overall and 9-13 in Big 12 play, while Missouri is now 23-26 overall and 9-15 in league action.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead by plating runs in the second, third and sixth innings but KSU scored one run in the seventh inning before getting the first four batters in the eighth to reach and eventually score to pick up the 5-3 win.
Missouri's Lee Laskowski reached on an error to open the second inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. After two outs were recorded, Luke Cassis singled to left field to score Laskowski and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In the top half of the second inning, Cassis helped the Tigers turn an inning-ending double play by snaring a line drive and making the throw across the diamond to catch a stray runner off of first base.
In the third inning, Jayce Tingler reached on an error and stole second base. The stolen base was Tingler's 13th of the season and 47th in his career, tying him with Dave Silvestri (1986-88) for fourth place on the Tigers' all-time career charts. Tingler scored on Cody Ehlers' single to center field and give MU a 2-0 lead.
W.T. Hoover led off the sixth inning with a double. He eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 Tigers' edge.
Kansas State scored its first run of the game, taking advantage of a two-out error before getting back-to-back singles. In the Wildcats' half of the eighth inning, Osmar Castillo led off the inning with a walk before Gabe Luttrell singled. Pat Maloney walked to load the bases before Tim Doty doubled to left-center field and cleared the bases. Doty scored after a throwing error to give the Wildcats a 5-3 lead.
KSU relief pitcher Franco Pezely retired eight of the nine batters he faced to pick up the win. MU's Garrett Broshuis took the loss, falling to 4-6 this season.
Cassis led the Tigers with two hits. Tingler did not get a hit in four trips to the plate, snapping his 24-game hit streak two games shy of Missouri's all-time record.
The two teams will continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
