The University of Missouri women's tennis team defeated Syracuse 4-3 in a six-hour marathon Saturday at the Green Tennis Center at Mizzou. The match capped of a day that began with the dedication ceremony that officially opened the Green Tennis Center.
Among those on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony included MU Chancellor Richard Wallace, MU Director of Athletics Mike Alden, members of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Marching Mizzou, the Golden Girls, and Truman the Tiger.
During the ceremony, tribute was paid to Jerry Green and all the founding club members and others whose hard work and substantial contributions made MU's new state of the art indoor tennis center a reality.
The Tiger tennis team followed the ceremony by picking up its ninth win of the year.
"This was a tough match," Missouri Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "All of our doubles teams played extremely well. Down the line, we let a few matches get away from us, and we have to give Syracuse credit for that. They really made us work hard. Lucie Ruskova played amazing today, and both she and Caitlin played great to close the match out for us.
"Now that we are getting towards the end of the year, I think the players are realizing that the year really is almost over," Starkey added. "They have a lot of respect for each other and today, while it wasn't pretty, they realized the importance of the day and everyone stepped up to get the job done."
