Atlanta, Ga. - The University of Missouri women's soccer team earned their first win of the spring season with a 2-1 victory over Wake Forest University.
In a tough battle in the pouring rain, Missouri came out on top. Defense was the key to success, as players were slipping and sliding all over the field.
Sophomore goalkeepers Stephanie Krawczyk and Megan Duncan proved to be as powerful in the spring as in the regular season. In the first half, Krawczyk recorded a shut-out, making 3 saves. In the second half Duncan allowed 1 goal while saving 5 shots.
After a scoreless first half, Missouri's first goal was scored about 15 minutes into the second half by the persistence of Sophomore Adriene Davis and Freshman Melissa Peabody. Peabody attacked the ball at midfield and forced it to the goal. With a beautiful cross from Peabody, Davis took a quick shot to score her first goal of the spring season.
Wake Forest quickly answered with a goal of their own. From about 40 yards out, A.B. Robbins crossed the ball in front of the goal. Weather conditions caused the ball to take an uncharacteristic bounce out of Duncan's reach and into the goal.
The Tigers, unwilling to give up, scored their winning goal from Peabody. After forcing the Wake Forest defender to pass the ball back to the goalie, Peabody used her footwork to steal the ball. A quick shot led her to her first goal of the spring season.
Coach Blitz was extremely pleased with the team as a whole.
"I am very happy with the team effort. Our spring training has set us out on the right foot. Probst had a strong game today. Adriene Davis and Missy Peabody were strong out front for us. Lacy Moore, Carrie Crosset and Kim Hibbert dominate the back field. Overall, it was a good team effort," said Blitz.
Missouri continues their spring season tomorrow, April 14, when they take on the Atlanta Beat.
