Katy, Texas - The University of Missouri men's golf team opened its 2002 spring season today at the Rice Intercollegiate, held at Meadowbrook Farms Country Club in Katy, Texas. Twelve teams played two rounds today, and the final round of play will be contested Tuesday.
Head Coach Tim Robyn's squad got their season off to a solid start, as the Tigers stand tied for 2nd place through day one, with rounds of 304 and 292 for a total of 596. Mizzou is tied with fellow Big 12 schools Baylor and Kansas State for 2nd, 15 strokes behind leader Tennessee (291-290=581).
Senior Mark McBride (Lebanon, Mo.) led the way individually for Missouri, and he stands tied for 5th place through day one, with identical rounds of 73 for a two-round total of 146. The two-time defending Missouri State Amateur Champion is just two shots behind leader Ian Parnaby of Tennessee.
Freshman Ben Scott (Lancashire, United Kingdom) fired rounds of 73 and 75 Monday for a first-day total of 148, and stands tied for 10th place. Two other Tigers, sophomore Brandon Knaub (Seven Valleys, Pa.) and senior Chris Happ (Winnetka, Ill.) are perched in the top-25, as well, with identical totals of 151 after day one. Knaub opened with an eight-over par 80, but followed with a two-under 71 in the afternoon round, which marked the low round of the day for MU competitors. Sophomore Mike Radek (Chicago, Ill.) was six shots back, tied for 52nd place with a first-day total of 157 after rounds of 80 and 77.
