
#12 Tiger Wrestling Team Defeats #13 Purdue, 21-15

The University of Missouri wrestling team came back to defeat the Purdue Boilermakers, 21-15, at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility in West Lafayette on Friday evening.
The #12 Tigers beat the #13 Boilermakers despite each team winning five matches apiece. The Tigers had the advantage though as they scored two falls to the Boilermakers zero.
The Tigers where down 9-0 after three matches and a three-point deficit with two matches remaining to complete the comeback. The Tigers improve to 3-1 in duals for the season. The Boilermakers suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 6-1 for the season.
The meet started with Purdue's Brad Harper defeated Jon Sioredas by decision, 10-5 in the 157-pound bout. Sioredas wrestled in place of starter Kenny Burleson, who sat out due to an injury.
In the 165-pound match the Boilermaker's #10 Oscar Santiago came back from a 3-2 deficit heading into the third period to upset #4 ranked Tyron Woodley, 7-5. Santiago recorded two takedowns in the final period to pull off the upset.
The Tiger's Matt Turner suffered a 5-3 setback against #8 Ryan Lange. Turner was tied 3-3 with Lange going into the third, until Lange recorded a takedown and held off Turner for the win.
The Tigers, down 9-0, looked upon redshirt freshman Jeff Foust to score the teams first points. Foust defeated Ben Wissel by a 7-6 decision in the 184-pound bout. Foust, wrestling for an injured Scott Barker, improved his dual meet record to 3-0 for the season.
Senior Dante Stone fed off Foust's victory and recorded a 5-3 upset over fifth ranked Jon Bush. Stone never trailed in the match, recording a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second for the win. The win brought the team score to 9-6 in favor of the Boilermakers.
Kevin Herron put the Tigers in the lead 12-9, with a pin of Israel Blevins in 1:51. Herron improved to 4-0 in duals for the season with three wins coming via falls, both totals lead the team.
The lead was short lived, as the Tiger's Mark Bader fell to Purdue's sophomore All-American and second ranked Chris Fleeger, 7-1, in the 125-pound match. The Purdue victory knotted the score up at 12 apiece.
The Boilermakers then took the lead 15-12, on a Rene Hernandez 6-5 victory over Chris McCormick. Hernandez scored a reversal with less than 15 seconds left in the final period to win.
NCAA qualifier and 11th ranked J.P. Reese took matters into his own hands and gave Missouri the lead once again. He recorded a pin against Doug Withstandley in 6:50 to put Missouri on top 18-15.
In the final and deciding match of the evening, sixth ranked Jeremy Spates recorded his first dual victory, with an 11-6 victory over 19th ranked Dan Jankowski in the 141-pound bout. The win gave the Tigers a 21-15 victory and their third straight dual victory.
The Tigers will try to make it four straight as they head south to Bloomington, Indiana to take on the Hoosiers of Indiana University at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.

NEWS FROM THE MAT: Senior All-American Scott Barker did not make the trip to Indiana with the team. Barker sprained his ankle in practice on Monday. He is expected to be ready for the Lonestar Duals in Dallas, Texas on January 4, 2003...Kenny Burleson is also expected to be healthy by the Lonestar Duals as well.
