Kansas City, Mo. - The Missouri-Kansas rivalry, already one of the nation's most fierce competitions, will now be more enticing than ever, thanks to the creation of the Border War Series, as unveiled today in a joint announcement between the two schools.
The series, made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Midwest Ford Dealers, will feature a scoring system that awards points to each school based on the results of head-to-head competition in 17 different sports. The school that has accumulated the most points at the end of the year will be awarded the Traveling Border War Cup at the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission Banquet each June.

"Few rivalries in all of college athletics can match the spirit and intensity of Mizzou and Kansas, and I think this award will be representative of the storied athletic rivalry between the two universities," said MU Director of Athletics Mike Alden. "We are very pleased that the Midwest Ford Dealers have joined us in this venture, and we believe that their sponsorship will enable us to further enhance the exposure of our athletic programs through this series," he said.
"We are very excited about this new venture," said KU Director of Athletics Dr. Allen Bohl. "Athletic competition between KU and Missouri has been going on since the late 1800s, and the Border War Series is a great way to showcase this intense and historic rivalry. We hope this venture will promote great sportsmanship between our two schools, and we are looking forward to the competition," he said.
"The Midwest Ford Dealers are very proud to be a part of the first-ever KU vs. MU Border War competition," said Mark Smith of the Midwest Ford Dealers. "As part of the community for nearly a hundred years, we have strong ties with both of these universities and understand the history and intensity of this rivalry. We hope that our sponsorship will heighten the awareness of this spirited competition between the Jayhawks and the Tigers, as well as increase the recognition and support that both programs deserve," he said.
