COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Tiger swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2002-03 season with its annual Black and Gold Meet at the University Natatorium in front of a packed house. The Black team held off a late rally by the Gold team to win the exhibition intersquad meet 219-184.
Junior Rebecca Wolfe (swimming for the Black team) set a new meet record in the 500 freestyle, winning with a time of 5:03.97. Former record holder Molly Vetter was on hand to see her record time of 5:04.54 (set in 1999) fall. Wolfe also added a victory in the 100 butterfly (58.52).
Freshman Chris Lukas (Black) upset Senior NCAA qualifiers Radu Miclaus (Gold) and Matt Ferrarelli (Black) in the 100 backstroke. In the most exciting event of the meet, Lukas took a commanding lead off the start and held on late charged by both Miclaus and Ferrarelli and won with a meet record time of 52.33. Ferrarelli finished second with a time of 52.36, followed by Miclaus (52.70).
Senior Jamie Sweeney (Black) won the 1-Meter dive with a score of 279.38 and sophomore Amanda Maret (Gold) won the women's 1-Meter (237.90). Maret also won the 3-Meter with a score of 442.42. Freshmen Zac Metcalf and Aaron Wionzek tied in the 3-meter (537.30) to give the Gold team the top two finishers in the event.
The Tigers travel to Lincoln, Nebraska this weekend to compete in the Big 12 Relays on Friday, October 11 and then face off against conference rivals Texas A&M and Nebraska on Saturday, October 12. The next home meet is on Nov. 1 against Kansas.
